A few notes and points before we face the angry birds on sunday

Fitz is too good of a WR to give Kolb time to set up his throws too often.

Fitz will get some catches but with double teams all day he won't be able to dominate. Assuming we double him and put Gamble and a safety on him all day. I surely hope we are done with the old keep the DB on the same side no matter what while the offensive guy picks his matchups and burns us.

Fitz can beat double teams just as easily as Smitty use to back in the day.....if Kolb had too much time I still see Fitz carving through us.

I mean putting Gamble and Godfrey on him.....ain't gonna stop him w/ a QB w/ time.

Fitz isn't the YAC monster Smith is, keep him infront of the Saftey and you can limit his impact. You're not going to stop him, both you can minimize the damage by bracket cvg and good tackling.

should be noted, Kolb saw the legendary Philly D being carried on by McD......

Rivera made it known this would be his D so realistically there should be plenty thrown at him he didn't see in the Philly practices based off what he ran in SD and Chicago.

McDermott and Rivera cut their teeth under the same mentor (the late Jim Johnson).

Rivera has since had the experience of working under other coaches, though. Carolina is McDermott's first job outside the Eagles organization.

What Rivera ran in Chi was nothing close to the classic Johnson D. I think McD and Rivera will bring fronts and looks that weren't the staple of the Philly days.

But if you give Kolb all day there is no stopping the short stuff to Fitz.......then it just sets up Godfrey to get beat badly. Anything close to one on one with a deep pass and Fitz is gonna win that battle at an absurd rate. The only person better and going up to get a ball than Smitty in his prime is Fitz.

Fitz's strength is going up over a smaller DB and wrestling away the ball. He is big and can take up space but he is not as fast as Smitty or as elusive after the catch.

Kolb is not that great throwing deep at all. Gamble and Martin can cover him.

Who said give him all day? There is a big difference between blitzing all out and giving him all day to throw. You are trying to make a point by using extremes. As I said you double him deep and he is only human. Cover everyone short and send 4 or 5 against Kolb. The idea is not to all out blitz because it gives him too many uncovered guys who are just standing there waiting for a dumpoff pass or a quick slant.

Sign for hope from misinformed fans: Cards suck, Cards suck, Cards suck.

Reality: LFitz is gonna rape us, Roberts is ready to bust out, Colb isn't incompetent by any stretch, their running game is still enough to gash our rookie DTs+f**cking andre f**king neblett, durp theres always week 2, oh wait

Rivera also had some other influences (Buddy Ryan and Mike Ditka in his playing days, for example) but Johnson was one of his prime mentors as a coach. After his Philly days, he worked under Dave Wannstedt (bit of a downgrade from Johnson).

Be it the Jim Johnson influence via McDermott or what Rivera was able to with with Uhrlacher, Briggs and Co in Chicago lets hope our defenses are as effective as they were during Rivera's time in Philly and Chicago. Not to mention San Diego and what the defense achieved with a team where much of the priority was on offense. Also encouraging is the teams winning more games following Rivera's arrival in Philly, Chicago and year 2 in SD.

We beat these guys last year with Clausen and w/o DWill. They were last in the NFC in rushing D and will be starting the same front 7 as last year. They will start a rookie and a 2nd year undrafted player from their practice squad at CB, Marshall at nickel and a safety coming off a torn bicep. Despite the historically horrible 1st game stats of #1 drafted QBs ( Manning 3 ints, Aikman 2 ints, Elway 1 comp), Newton has shown the wherewithal to handle the pressure w/o turning the ball over. This is a game we can and WILL win.
