Panthers Scouting Pat White hard

I can't believe you opened up with Akili Smith and Vince Young to illustrate how KT feels that teams feel a black QB is too risky, those are perfect examples to prove they are, which of course they aren't. Of course black QBs can be great QBs, it's not even a question and should never even be a factor. I don't believe it is. If you want to make the argument that it occurs in grade school/high school then I might reevaluate my opinion, but once it gets to college/pros, it's just BS. Mike Vick has never been a QB IMO, he's been a running back who takes snaps and occasionally makes a throw. Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb are the real deal along with Warren Moon. KT does his race a disservice in his zeal to militantly throw out the race card, again, IMO...

Its not the race card Mintal, its reality. If Pat White were drafted by the Panthers, he would be the first black QB drafted in team history. Chances are slim this "old school" regime goes after him. If we did draft him I think it can and would work. And the guy could step up for us in 2010. I rank QB as my biggest need in my draft list. Others may disagree. But I think that questionmark is a HUGE one for this franchise's future that needs to be addressed NOW. We need to begin the process of finding #17s successor, why not Pat White #5?

First of all we have not drafted that many quarterbacks in our history. Collins, Weinke, Fasani and LeFors are it. The fact that none of them are black is not surprising. There aren't that many that get drafted in any year by an old school, new school or any regime. And I think it is due to talent not a concerted effort to keep out black athletes from the NFL. How many black 6-4 quarterbacks with strong arms playing in a prostyle offense are in there in college playing for D-1 school this year? Well, like it or not, that is a quintessential NFL quarterback and what they are looking for. Doesn't matter whether they are black, green yellow or polka dotted.

Anyone else who is shorter, doesn't play in a pro-style offense etc, is a risk plain and simple. And we won't take risks like that on a quarterback most of the time. I am an alumni or ECU and have closely followed 2 black quarterbacks who have made it to the NFL- Blake and Garrard. Both got there due to their passing skills and the fact that they played for Steve Logan who had a pro-style offense. Offensive coordinator for BC who helped develop Matt Ryan in 2007. ECU has a starting black quarterback now-Pinkney. Will he be drafted next year? I doubt it. Too short, not a good enough arm, etc. By the way he outplayed none other than Pat White earlier this year.

How many black quarterbacks have we had on our roster? Three come to mind- Peete, Craig, Rutherford. Seems to me we will work with anyone who has the talent. Race isn't the factor or excuse you would like it to be anymore. Maybe in the 70s and 80s it was, but not today. There are too many black quarterbacks who have done well to convince me that there is a barrier anymore. When people started looking inside instead of outside for the reasons they don't succeed, they will instantly discover how to do just that.

Never said the Panthers werent willing to work with a black QB. Just said they have never drafted one and White would be the first. No need to get salty about it, its true. I agree, we dont typically DRAFT QBs which is a problem in itself. But drafting a QB of Pat White's ability and background to be a successor would be a HUGE change of culture in Carolina. You can front all you want.

Black QB's are NOT a risk. Its the TYPE of QB that is a risk. Run first QBs are always going to be a risk because they usually don't translate well into the pros. It has nothing to do with race that KT trys to make it out to be time and time again.

As mentioned before black QBs have succeeded before like McNair, Moon, McNabb because they are a QB first and not RB first. Guys like Vick and Young do not help their team in the long run because they are mostly a RB than QB. Football teams need QBs! Not RBs that are QBs in disguise! KT is a joke.

Exactly. If you can pass, have experience in a pro style offense and have the right measurables you will be picked by the NFL. Having the ability to scramble and run is a huge plus in the NFL and would be a distinct advantage as long as you can also throw the ball, read defenses, stand tall in the pocket and everything they expected.

Everybody's mad at KT for saying the Panthers have never drafted a black QB. Too bad he's not lying. Could they? Perhaps. Should anyone hold their breath for it? No. If black QBs arent perceived as such a risk, tell the front office to draft one sometime.

When and if we draft another quarterback then we can have a discussion. Until then it is moot since we don't draft any quarterbacks.

So why is it immediately assumed every black QB that can scramble and run, cant pass?
