5. Cam Newton (Jr)

POS: QB-TE

HT: 6'6"

WT: 250

40-YD: 4.60

Age: 22

Projected:

Upside:

* Rare run strength and power for a QB

* Excellent size and athletic mobility

* Makes throws with defenders all over him

* Effortless release

* Outstanding arm strength and velocity

Downsides:

* Raw throwing motion

* Limited field vision

* Spotty passer

* Floats too many throws into traffic

* Operated very collegiate spread offense

* Suspect character and maturity

Summary: Carried Auburn to the national championship, dominating SEC competition along the way. Has lottery-type physical ability, but is far from being a polished NFL pocket passer. Has a huge ego and personality traits that have doomed similar prospects in recent years.

While his passing is still a concern (to me at least), I am very happy that the later part concerning his character and maturity has been put to bed (once again, in my opinion). An immature egomaniac does not campaign for the team's leading WR to stay with the team, nor does he stay up at night after a bad practice talking with his new coach about how he's concerned with letting down all of his teammates.

So long as he can get more consistent with his passing accuracy, I'll be able to live without Dareus, Peterson, and Green :)

13. Terrell McClain

POS: NT

HT: 6'1.75"

WT: 300

40-YD: 5.12

Arm: 32.75"

Hand: 10.25"

Age: 23

Projected: 2-3

Upside:

* Long arms

* Strong lower body - squats 600 pounds - with a thick bubble

* Good quickness to penetrate and short-area burst to close

* Flows down the line

* Can push the pocket

Downsides:

* Carries too much bad weight

* Struggles to locate the ball

* Inconsistent, plays when he wants to

* Questionable mental and physical toughness, competitiveness

Summary: Impressed at the East-West Shrine Game before a hamstring injury prevented him from participating at the Senior Bowl. Has starter-caliber physical ability, but can look very blockable and concerns about his makeup and a late dash for cash could temper his appeal.

24. Sione Fua

Lacks ideal height, but flashes hand strength and is functional as a one-gap run defender. Smart, touch, coachable player with adequate athletic ability and instincts. Developmental prospect.

24. Kealoha Pilares (Jr)

POS: WR

HT: 5'10.75"

WT: 213

40-YD: 4.60

Age: 23

Arm: 30.75"

Hand: 8.5"

Projected: Round 6-7

Upside:

* Good hands, strength, and balance

* Slot experience

* Quick into routes and has good posture

* Sticks his foot and pops out of breaks

* Adjusts to throws, catches on contact

Downsides:

* Limited route tree in pass-happy system

* Average speed

* Doesn't turn over stride with frequency

* Drifts into some routes

* More of a weaver than a creative returner

Summary: Thickly built, productive, feisty, quicker-than-fast slot receiver and converted running back who understands how to work inside, catch and get upfield. Has enough suddenness, strength, and toughness to operate short-to-intermediate.

12. Lee Ziemba

POS: ORT

HT: 6'6"

WT: 317

40-YD: 5.25

Age: 22

Arm: 33.5"

Hand: 9.5"

Projected: Round 2-3

Upside:

* Exceptional size and body length

* Highly competitive and tough

* Flashes a mean streak - works to finish blocks with an old-school mentality

* Can bump, steer, and control

* Good blocking instincts - feels pressure and is alert to see the blitz

* Four-year SEC starting left tackle

Downsides:

* Lacks weight-room strength

* Marginal lateral agility

* Plays too tall - late to react and adjust to movement

* Does not play with knee bend or roll his hips as a run blocker

* Lumbers to the second level

* The game got on top of him too fast inside at the Senior Bowl

Summary: A long-limbed, duck-footed, heavy-footed college left tackle who projects best to right tackle in the pros. Could become a functional starter in the pros but will require time to adjust and could turn out to be a right tackle only.

Still can't believe we landed him when we did. I think he'll turn out to be a great pick up.

14. Byron Bell (Jr)

POS: OLT-OLG

HT: 6'5"

WT: 340

40-YD: 5.25

Age: 22

Projected: Round 4-5

Upside:

* Outstanding girth - has a big, thick trunk and lower-body power

* Can short-set and stone defenders in their tracks

* Good base, balance, and anchor strength - seldom is moved or gets knocked backward

* Shuffles, slides, and can protect the edge

Downsides:

* Does not play to his size

* Footwork and technique are very raw - too often opens his shoulders

* Heel-striker in pass protection

* Relies too much on his upper-body strength and is slow-handed

* Late to reach the second level

* Was not challenged against mid-major competition

Summary: A mammoth left tackle who could warrant attention inside, Bell is still immature and learning what it means to work. Has the girth and in-line power to develop into a solid pro for a mashing offensive line such as that of the Cowboys or Dolphins.

After hearing his story, I know a lot of fans were pulling for this guy, myself included. Glad to hear he's made the squad. I think we have one of those offensive lines that he'll fit in on.

8. Brandon Hogan

POS: CB

HT: 5'10"

WT: 192

40-YD: 4.45

Age: 23

Arm: 30"

Hand: 9.625"

Projected: Round 3-4

Upside:

* Athletic, quick-twitched, and agile

* Good balance and transitions smoothly

* Quick to plant, drive

* Very confident and competitive

* Good range, ball skills, and hands

Downsides:

* Questionable character, maturity

* Takes risks and gets burned occasionally

* Could struggle vs. big receivers

* Needs to improve functional strength

* Selective tackler

Summary: A secound-round pick on talent alone, Hogan is gifted with fluid movement skills, agility, and suddenness to mirror and make plays on the ball. However, his value is tempered by repeated incidents, which raise red flags about his character and long-term dependability.

10. Josh Thomas

POS: CB

HT: 5'10.125"

WT: 196

40-YD: 4.45

Age: 22

Arm: 31.5"

Hand: 9"

Projected: Round 6-7

Upside:

* Surprising strength to reroute receivers

* Good balance

* Light on his feet

* Transitions and accelerates quickly

* Aware in zone

* Willing run supporter, solid tackler

Downsides:

* Not a playmaker - two INTs in four years

* Questionable downfield ball skills

* Lacks elite speed

* Average burst and transitional quickness

* Can be sealed on the edge by receivers

Summary: Good-sized, athletic, scrappy, aggressive zone corner with quick feet and surprising play strength, though he lacks elite top-end speed and start-caliber ball skills. Has a good playing temperament that will allow him to fight for a job as a cover-2, zone corner.

10. Zack Williams

Could warrant interest as a big-bodied, long-armed, versatile, swing interior backup. Must show that he can handle the complexity of the NFL game and improve his functional play strength.

Practice Squad guys:

22. Darvin Adams (Jr)

POS: WR

HT: 6'3"

WT: 185

40-YD: 4.55

Age: 21

Projected: Round 4-5

Upside:

* Stems off the line and can sink his hips

* Attacks the ball in the air with his hands

* Can take a hit and maintain possession

* Fights after the catch

* Experience playing special-teams units

Downsides:

* Lacks elite top-end speed to chew cushion

* Average suddenness to create separation

* Mistimes jumps

* Concentration drops

* Average downfield playmaking ability

* Lacks run strength

Summary: A lanky, competitive, functional possession receiver who likes to play. Adams runs solid routes, navigates zone and helps his quarterback. Could be a good No. 4 if he proves himself a consistent catcher and contributes on special teams.

13. Lawrence Wilson (Jr)

POS: WLB

HT: 6'0.75"

WT: 225

40-YD: 4.69

Arm: 30.5"

Hand: 9.75"

Age: 23

Projected: Round 4-5

Upside:

* Good feet to shuffle

* Can run and hit - shows good range

* Good closing burst when he sees it

* Pop on contact

* Good in coverage - gets depth in zone, able to shadow TEs

Downsides:

* Average speed, lacks a second gear

* Not especially fluid or sudden for his size

* Lacks bulk, defeated by lead blockers

* Gets caught in traffic

* Fooled by misdirection, takes false steps

Summary: An undersized, short-armed, experienced four-year starter most natural when he has room to open his stride and chase. Is very blockable between the tackles and fits best protected on the weak side in a fast-flowing, one-gap scheme where he could sniff out the ball.

11. Kendrick Burney

POS: CB

HT: 5'9"

WT: 181

40-YD: 4.55

Arm: 29.5"

Hand: 9.25"

Age: 23

Projected: Round 4-5

Upside:

* Efficient mover - quick-footed, agile

* Sinks his hips and pops out of breaks

* Diagnoses quickly

* Very good ball skills to highpoint, intercept

* Assignment-sound

* Quick to support run

Downsides:

* Undersized

* Timed speed is just adequate

* Needs to improve functional strength

* Not heavy-handed to jam with force

* Slow to disengage, slips off some tackles

Summary: Smallish, smart, tough, ballhawking cover-2 cornerback who doesn't have ideal measurables but compensates with instincts, playmaking ability, and a dedication to his craft. Was suspended the first six games of the 2010 season for receiving improper benefits.
