WR corps: The annual elephant in the room

Why do people treat Smitty like he is a god. 2005 was a long time ago. QB play shouldn't be an issue because people act like he preserved though Delhomme's bad QB play, and took every three yard pass to the house.

He is still good, but this is the year for him to prove he is still a #1.

WTF are we gonna do if Smitty gets hurt? We aren't looking all that different from last year. No legitimate, seasoned vet opposite of Smitty seems like the elephant in the room that just won't leave. And, every year we just gloss over it, much like the FO seems to do, until it rears its ugly head on Sundays. I hope the coaches know something about Naane & Ajirotutu that the stats don't speak to. We appear, yet again, one Steve Smith away from disaster. It's going to take more than Olsen/Shockey to be effective without Smith.

why will it take more than Olsen / Shockey? The Chargers have torn teams apart with Gates and Jackson, and nothing more. Heck, they didn't even have Jackson last season. 2 great pass catching TE's are more effective than a 2nd WR.

This may get you to the postseason, but it ain't gonna sustain you through the dance, if you can get to it.

All I can say is make sure as hell you get Olsen on your fantasy team. I think they probably told Cam to try to spread the ball around in the preseason, but when the real games start and he's the only person open, he's going to put up monster numbers.

think Shockey will hurt his fantasy value. I think Shockey will surprise some this year and definately hurt Olsen's fantasy value. I think Olsen will be the better FF player but I think Shockey won't be that far behind him (pending healthy)

Who's talking about making the Superbowl? Heck...we need to worry about winning more than 2 games this year. There is still time to build that position for a Superbowl run.

playoffs????

meh...we'll be fine. much better receiving corps than we have had in a long time, and i'm including olsen and shockey in that.

scheme and game planning will help a lot as well.

since the OL is fixed (healthy otah + hangman + MJG = fixed) i'm not all tha worried about the offense at all. even if smith goes down, it will be fine...not playoff bound, but we weren't that anyway, but still fine.

and we have some good WR prospects coming out next year in jefferys and blackmon who will be good options if WR is still a need.

honestly can't remember when the last time we had WR targets better than what we have this year.......plus you can't fix everything overnight.

Smitty, Olsen, Shockey, random dude off the street.....are better recieving targets than what we have put on the field in probably half a decade. Scheme playing a role.

This is the reason why the Gettis injury is a bummer. Not so much the production/win totals for this year, but what exactly we have in the youngster. Year 2 is a big gauge for most players and it would help to know what kind of true talent we have at our positions heading into next year's draft and FA. Hopefully LaFell, Tutu, and AE step up this year and we can get a good grasp on whether or not to keep them or dump 'em and go grab our Andre Johnson in Alshon Jeffrey or Blackmon. I'd rather LaFell, Gettis and Tutu be our future and focus on a stud DT or CB in next year's draft.
