DT Marcus Harrison failed physical

Well, people are griping NOW for good reason. We'd better do something at DL, do you honestly think otherwise?

i am not complaining about griping.

i am complaining about griping based on knee-jerk reactions.

i am complaining about people whose grip on reality is so fragile that they think Ron Rivera, who's brought the last two teams he coached to the number one defenses in the league, doesn't know what he's doing or have an effective plan.

i am complaining about the people who know NOTHING about what goes on behind the scenes, who's been contacted, who's been contacted, who's declined offers and who's waiting to hear back from another team, who's actually got some major issues that fans don't know about, who's so valuable to their team that they won't be traded for less than the team is willing to give up.

opine away - this is a message board - but for gods sake assume the staff has brains and that they have jobs for a reason.

Perhaps we sign this Kearse guy and after week 1 or 2 we cut him and put him on the practice squad and sign a veteran DT or two because we don't have to guarantee their salary after week 1. That would be a good way to acquire guys to help now and in the future I think. We just don't know what is in store yet.

I don't like my FO thinking like that. fug the 1st 2 weeks lets worry more about saving money then winning. fug that we did that poo last year.

remember also that when rivera took the bears and the chargers to number one defenses that he didn't do it in a year - it took him two or three years. that's because he, unlike the frantic masses, knows that mortgaging future draft picks for immediate success at a given position isn't always the best idea.

we may struggle on defense a bit this year. maybe the DT problem won't be immediately and perfectly solved.

but ten bucks says a lot of you will be eating your words by the 2013 season.

Well it's still a business. You have to think economically in order to keep the team in contention yearly. (See Patriots & Steelers)

Do you think we're set at DL?

It's not 2013 I'm worried about. Don't get me wrong, 5 wins leave me satisfied but I think by throwing these young guys out there with little direction on field, the potential is more likely to be buried rather than brought out. Yes, yes, I'm not a coach or whatever, but many coaches have done it before and it has predictably ended in disaster years down the road.

The Hornets were a business too. Doesn't mean people like it when you do poo like this.

Ok well I'm just saying, you start drooling and demanding tons of free agents past their prime you might as well ask for Dan Snyder to run this franchise. How's he doing btw?

Comparing Hornets to Panthers is apples and oranges.

Exactly. No one expects miracles. If we win 3 games but do our best and show improvement, I can live with that.

But throwing these 3 young guys out there with no safety net would be like starting Newton with a crappy o-line and no running game.

We have the cap space. Spend the 2 million it would take to get somebody in here who has started before and at least give us a chance. Don't let the D get demoralized because they don't see the FO doing their best to make us competitive.

Is that unreasonable?

I'm not saying sign a whole bunch of FA. But you can't go into a season knowing you have a Major problem and having no DT with starting exp. is a major problem. Atleast last year we had 89# with 2 young WR. There is no vet at the DT position. Hell CJ is really the only Dlineman with starting exp. The fact is your not even putting a bandaid over it they are willing to let it bleed out.

We're not talking about mortgaging future draft picks. Nobody is endorsing trading high round picks to pick up some DT. We're talking about signing one of the available veterans who are an obvious and immediate upgrade over what we have currently.

If we go into the season with 3 out of 4 DTs having a combined total of 0 games played (much less starts), it's not just going to set us back as far as wins (which nobody expects many of anyways), it's going to set everything back from the secondary to the linebackers to Cam's development because he's not going to see the field (remember the time of possession vs. Miami?).

It will be demoralizing for the players and for the fan base. And the solution is so simple. There are at least 6 veteran DTs I could name off the top of my head right now who would be upgrades and provide passable play. There are no pro-bowlers or all-pros waiting to be signed, but there are big, able veterans.

No, it's not, but tanking another season is patently unreasonable and hopefully we just stop it.

And God help us, this young, young, young, only young bullsh*t around here - a good team combines youth with age.
