Godfrey will be nickel back (and other notes)

Reed's article mention Godfrey playing FS and Martin being SS... huh? When did that happen?
Maybe he's still thinking they're interchangable.

yeah, with fox there wasn't that much of a difference between the two. chris harris was most definitely a SS, but his role and duties were just about identical with FS...esp. when they ran the tampa2.

As opposed to the John Fox days?
ugh...there are so many problems i had with the way he ran a defense. too many holes and the players just weren't prepared for what they faced. i guess thats bound to happen when the league is changing and your head is buried in the sand.

LOOL! head buried in sand is the perfect way to described fox's last couple years here.

It wouldn't surprise me if Denver had a better defense this year than Carolina. You all like to rag on Fox, but he was and is a hell of a good coach.
meh...i'll be surprised, but considering the lack of offensive strength in their schedule. aside from the chargers x2, the packers and maybe the jets...it just isn't that stout offensively. they might have a decent ranking.

he was a good coach, but it's been years since that was the case.

Godfrey played the nickel, quite a bit against the Steelers. Personally, I like his athleticism. Also, I really like the fact that Rivera and CO. are willing to think outside the box. They did not feel like anyone they brought in was worth doing so. Moving Godfrey around can save a roster spot if it works out. Versatile players are valuable.

I actually love that they did not bring any cast offs at CB. Why start over with a player you do not know, when you have invested in teaching and coaching the players you do know.

Unfortunately, we are probably who we are going to be as concerning the CB and DT positions. Which will make it interesting to see how we scheme and play to cover our weaknesses.

I am NOT going to let the status of the D, which has not played a down in a regular season game, bring down my giddy.

Just my thoughts, and GOOOOO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Already coming up with excuses, huh? :)

He's a good coach. His act wore thin in Carolina, but that doesn't make him bad. And he'll turn Denver around, go roughly .500 for a few years, and then get replaced there too.

For a safety? He's not exactly in the class of Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu. The image of Peyton Hillis using him to wipe his feet is sadly burned into my brain.

Peyton Hillis runnng at almost full speed will knock over anyone that hits him shoulder-to-shoulder while standing still... physics. Godfrey was guilty of not going for the ankles, but ugly as it was I don't fault him for the outcome given the circumstances. 70-80% of NFL defenders (and 99.9% of DBs) would be bowled over in that situation as well.

Hey guys remember when you all were bitching about not going after FA WRs this year

and the Smitty saifd that we DID go after some big name WRs.

Probably the same thing happened with big name CBs this year.

This isn't Madden; not many people are going to want to come to a 2-14 team with the strongest strength of schedule.

The coaching staff is doing what they can with what they have.
