Gabbert now #3 on Jags depth chart

While fellow rookie first-round QB Cam Newton will start the regular-season opener, Jacksonville's Blaine Gabbert finds himself third on the depth chart to begin the year.

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio announced that veteran Luke McCown will initially be David Garrard's primary backup under center.

"It's a bigger deal to the people on the outside," said Gabbert, the 10th pick of the 2011 draft, on Thursday.

"We look at it as we're quarterbacks, and if Dave goes down for some horrible reason, that we have to be ready to play. We haven't gone over who's ranked on the depth chart. We just know Dave's the starter."

Preseason numbers always come with a few grains of salt, but McCown's passer rating of 125.5 easily eclipsed both Garrard (56.5) and Gabbert (64.3).

McCown looked poised to push an ineffective Garrard early in 2010 but tore his right ACL in mop-up duty at San Diego last September.

Didn't Alex Smith start most of his rookies season while A-Rod rode the bench for years? I was not a Gabbert fan either, but where you are on the depth chart game 1 will have little effect on where you are 2 years from now.

Good point but, Rodgers had a future hall of famer in front of him while i believe San Fran was in the same boat as the Panthers... No one worth a dam.

There's a reason Cam and Locker went before Gabbert.

I really don't want to name them, but there are other future hall of famers who weren't day one starters or even year one. And there are day 1 starters or year one starters that turned out to bust.

There are a lot of players who get drafted after players @ their position and turns out to be better.

None of these guys futures are set or decided... They all have good upside and issues they need to overcome. Who does that the best is who will be rise to the top of this class. It is going to take time to see how things play out.

I mean when Vick got drafted he had all the talent in the world... but it wasn’t until after jail and he made changes that he's started to reach his potential. Just like Vick Cam's physical talent & opportunity has him starting week 1. What he does with it and how soon is up to him. But day starter/bench does not guarantee anything for the next 5 years + future of these young QB's. We are just starting folks.
