This preseason definitely left a lot to be desired, but what can you expect after the baggage of the walkout, new players and new coaches? Even more, the coaching staff has to deal with a team that has arguably been in lame duck mode since the loss to Arizona in the playoffs, including an owner with dice in one hand, and an electric carving knife in the other in preparation for the battle leading up to the new CBA. After experiencing the FO's hack job in 2010 that led to destiny taking its course, and John Fox ultimately walking off into the sunset (probably to his delight, and Panthers fans' collective sigh of relief), the FO did one thing right: Hire Ron Rivera.

Although it may be hard to see amidst all the chaos, especially for those with a lack of imagination and experience with observing football, Rivera has a vision. Gone are the days of ultraconservative football that was more fit for 1980 than today's modern football era. Foxball is dead in Carolina! Rivera, along with his guys, Chud and McDermott, are not going to be content with doing just enough to sneak out with a win, their philosophy is to attack on both sides of the ball with chaotic, controlled aggression.

But unlike Fox (and his past regimes), Rivera seems to be a little bit more forward thinking and able to adapt to the situation, and make adjustments. Arguably the first example of this Rivera-style of coaching was the drafting of Cam Newton. I am not saying that Newton would have been Rivera's first pick if he could have summoned a genie in a bottle, but I believe that Rivera wanted Cam in the worst kind of way considering the circumstances, because Rivera---just like everybody else---saw Cam's potential. He could have taken the easy, more conservative route and left Cam on the board, but he brought Cam aboard because Coach Rivera believes in not only his ability, but his guys' ability to unleash not only the beast in Cam, but the beast within the team.

Now, I am sure that Rivera's optimism lead to his "prediction" that the Panthers could go 10-6 this year. Yes, the Double Rs got a little excited. Perhaps in that moment he forgot that he wasn't dealing with "his team", but a group with leftover pieces of Fox's "un-imagination" (and Jerry's hatchet), if you will. But, I am telling you fellow Panthers fans that once Rivera, Chud and Derm get their guys---one's that they are directly responsible for bringing here---especially via the draft, then Rivera's vision is going to excite us for years to come. It's hard to predict how long it will take. I don't know if some of our most beloved Panthers will even be here. Don't even know if Cam's gonna be here, but one day we (as well as the rest of the league) are going to marvel at Rivera and company's brand of football, and it's going to be great to watch. We just gotta give it some time.

i'm not reading all of that poo...

i think despite all the bitching and moaning about whatever ills the team has that people realize it's going to take time to right the ship...

...but in the end, winning and winning asap is the only thing that's going to erase the stale taste from the previous era.

Whatever. I came to the realization a long time ago that most people, if they can read or not, are more interested in one-liners,flame wars and b.s. than analytical words of motivation and hope. On the Huddle, as in life, one can only take their own little piece of the world, and do with it what they can. Once in a while on this forum, I feel the desire to express my thoughts in a more meaningful---if not artistic---way, and if one person appreciates my sentiment, then it's all good (and, believe it or not, one person has).

this is the huddle...and just like a huddle in a football game, you have a matter of seconds to make your point before being penalized...or in this forum's case, tuned out.

prime example, it took me several attempts to completely read your second post...i kept losing interest about half way thru.

You can disagree with certain decisions made by the powers that be and be "all in" as alot of you guys say. The reality is that he has been interviewing for head jobs since he and Lovie were in the running together in Chicago, that was 03. In seven years you always heard good things but no one would take the chance on him, and he has been interviewed every year. I think Jerry got him dirt cheap and that was the real deciding factor. Before you cuss me check the facts. And some of the decisions so far are clearly to sell tickets and not what is best for this team to win now. It is gonna be a long year but like you I do hope for better next year.

In seven years you always heard good things but no one would take the chance on him, and he has been interviewed every year. I think Jerry got him dirt cheap and that was the real deciding factor. You may be absolutely right. Jerry has been a relatively cheap (err frugal) owner over the years---and downright miserly last year, but fate may have smiled upon his clenched fists in spades this time. Notwithstanding all the rejection of Rivera over the years as an HC, who arguably may not have been ready yet, this is now his time. His "seasoning" will only make him better.

the facts are that every time he has been in serious discussion for a HC job, he has been part of a team in the playoffs and teams looking to move on don't want to wait until after the playoffs just to even interview a prospect.

his contract wasn't dirt cheap, but i suppose if you don't like the hire and don't like the choice they made for QB, then you are going to be looking for a negative spin to put on everything.

i'm glad you are "hopeful" that things will work out, though.
