National Cam haters haven't watch Panthers

Not really.

I know people were all hyped up that he needed to score a TD. I suppose it could help his confidence, but I wouldn't have been bothered if it hadn't happened. In preseason, I prefer to evaluate how they play, not the stats they produce.

Bottom line on Newton: He's essentially got Jake Delhomme's passing mechanics in Ben Roethlisberger's physique with Daunte Culpepper's athleticism.

Worth remembering we won plenty with Delhomme at quarterback, and he wasn't anywhere near the physical specimen Newton is, so it's a different ballgame. Still, I have to admit I find it ironic that after years of people saying they wanted a franchise QB over Jake, we got a franchise QB with the same passing skills.

So like before, we can expect to see some throws that make us cheer, others that make us cringe, some that make us see "how did he do that" and others that make us say 'why did he do that".

As long as it equals out to wins, I'll be happy.

So as long as he plays like all the other QBs, he's fine...:biggrinjester:

Maybe his footwork is similar to Jake, but his actual throwing motion isn't anything like Jake's. It's actually very pretty.

I'm no expert but I'm guessing on 3rd and 10 the quarterback might just be looking downfield in order to hit a receiver and move the sticks instead of a 3 yard drag route....im just sayin. It's not like he had all day to scan the field with a 7 man blitz.

I do however think he should have hit smith, but I don't think that he took off running because he wasn't comfortable. I think that's just the type of player he is. To me it shows that he is capable of putting the team on his back by making a great play

7 man blitz? It was 5 men and all were well picked up... he actually had time to step up, but eh, whatever.

at about 47 seconds... clearly not 7 guys coming...

I don't think the scramble was a bad play but it's the kind of thing I expect he'd correct if he had the chance to for future games (in terms of decision making), because despite what some people seem to think here, there's no way Cam thinks that throwing to Smitty is a risky move so he just likely didn't see him until he was past the line of scrimmage.

I'm not really understanding the comparison to Delhomme when Newton has produced 0 turnovers.

Similar to Delhomme in that the ball placement is a crap shoot.

Sometimes perfect. Often not perfect but catchable. Other times...whoa

See above.

Cam's arm strength also a lot better than Delhomme's.

Falls under the "physical specimen" part.

And he probably has bigger hands.

So do I.

I think he blows Culpepper's athleticism out of the water.

Quite possible. Don't know that I put him up there with Vick though. He's more big and mobile than vapor trail fast.

Like I said, we won plenty of games with Delhomme. My take is just that people should have realistic expectations. Starting out, his passing is going to be borderline erratic and will likely require our receivers to adjust a lot. Hopefully that improves over time.

That's one difference, mind you. Newton can still be molded. By the time he got to us, Delhomme was what he was.

I get what you're saying, and not trying to nitpick, but that's kind of an ugly vision.

I am hoping he has better mechanics than Jake (though it may be wishful thinking). He might not even have Jake's mechanics (which may ultimately lead him to the bench) Ben is fat...OK, maybe "fat" compared to Cam's chiseled physique. And Cam's athleticism is more akin to Vick's than Culpepper's. And, you forgot the arm strength of Jeff George.

OK, I'd take Jake's mechanics with all the other intangibles.

I don't think it's that ugly.

Think Delhomme pre-surgery, not post.

he does but not by a ton, daunte was 9 1/2, Cam is 9 7/8... still, hand size is perfectly fine for cam (as it was for culpepper imo)

fwiw, I think he is quite a bit more athletic than Culpepper was but that's no guarantee he will be more/less successful at all.

i'll buy the jake delhomme comparison...as long as it's pre-surgery (which is what i was understanding it to mean anyways).

it more just has to go with the idea of him being a gunslinger. in college, i didn't really see him in that way, but i can really see it now. gunslingers aren't known for being consistently pretty throwing. it'[s often times very risky as far as the placement goes and will cause a lot of cringing. INTs will happen pretty often, but so will the big plays and TDs. it's more about mindset than anything. instead of trying to keep everything looking neat and precise it's more balls to the wall. those are the guys who end up doing some incredible things in clutch situations. it's still pretty risky, though it does make for some exciting football.

True I was exhagerrating a bit but that was a nice looking blitz by the steelers. We need some of that on defense
