Great story and pictures. On a side note, I just realized that your friend Ben is actually my cousin. That is crazy. I thought he looked familiar in the picture with Michelle Rodriguez, and then you said his name and I knew for sure it was him. When you see him again, tell him his cousin Casey said Hello.

Awesome awesome stuff, I continue to be hatefully jealous.

Dude you're an awesome writer, go on a trip like this and write about it, i'd read it. These sorts of things are affordable if you do it right. I threw change in a jar for months and it paid for my roundtrip tickets to Lima. $400 for the trek (that includes food and lodging) and another $500 for miscellaneous expenses for a week of travel (stay in $10 a night hostels like we did and you'll find your expenses are really low, and you'll have more fun while you're at it.)

This exact same trek is doable for about $1500... not all that difficult to scrape up if you really want to.

(on that note i'm actually considering starting a business as an international trekking guide... funass job and those guys make bank...)

How do you get to go to these places and do you have any spare room in your luggage?

because i have the desire to do it and the fear that accompanies doing these things doesn't hold me back. thats not motivational poster bullpoo - i know a ton of people that would LOVE to be able to go out and do these things and live the life they've dreamed of, but they excuse their fear (which usually relates to possessions, or comfort, or lackthereof, or simple xenophobia) with complaints that they can't afford it.

i love my job but i dont make very much money doing it. however, i save what i have, and i also travel very cheaply. i'm staying in a hostel for ten bucks a night and eating local food.

the average smoker spends 3-5000 bucks on cigarettes every year. i'm doing this trip for a little over 1500, roundtrip airfare included. if a smoker quit smoking, he could do two or three of my trips in a year with the money he saved. the same could be said of drinking and new cars and overpriced houses and massive televisions.

people choose what they want and they get it. i have chosen this, and it is mine.

Haven't read all this yet, but I will. I will say that you have done some interesting travel that I love reading about. Even if you are a dick sometimes..or at least have been on occasion.

don't take it personally, this is the internetz and you're a saints fan :D
