They could of simply been rewarding the kid for the work he had put in and putting him out there to help him have a shot of making the team.

Or they are worried about Dan in pass coverage and thought they would see a heavier pass attack

Well, you can't fumble while in the endzone, because if you have the ball in there you've already scored. But you can recover in the endzone, remember Moose in the playoffs against the Rams?
