Pat Yasinskas "unleash Newton"

I'm not interested in him running. Running QB's do not win Superbowls.

I am interesting in him learning to use his feet properly to buy time in the pocket.

Those QB's do win Superbowls.

him being able to run well and the coaches ability to use him effectively in that capacity will help buy him time as he develops into a better QB.

just like any talent a person comes to the table with, the way you make them better all around is to build around and on their strengths.

the problem with most so called dual threat QBs is that there hasn't really been a good balance between the two threats. that's what they need to work on...creating a positive balance between the two.

(not aimed at zod here...)i always have to question his being called a "running QB". first, who made that category up and what is the criteria? all QBs run to a certain extent if they are going to survive. if it's the percentage of times they run vs. the times they throw...wouldn't it make sense for them to own that name by running more times than they throw? if so, how does that apply to newton? he was effective because they had a solid balance between running and his ability as a passer.

like i said earlier, i don't see him running nearly as much as his coaches at auburn had him run, but i still see chud running him a lot more than what many traditionalists would feel comfortable with. it's all about using the talents he comes with while the rest is developed. in time he will pass the ball much more than he will be doing the first couple years, but that won't be any different than any other rookie QB in their development. the more they learn and the more experience they gain, the more offenses lean on their abilities as a passer and the less they run on the run game (which all offenses starting a rookie or green QB do).

what will make this different is that the panthers will be able to rely on the QB more than other teams do with their rookie QBs. his running ability just opens up more things for this offense than typical offenses with rookies at the helm.

I'm neither a hater or a lover, I'm a logician.

Just because the Panthers don't speak this into news cycles, doesn't mean it's not in the atmosphere surrounding their decision making.

If Luck had come out, someone who everyone knows can make Pro-level throws because they've seen it on a consistent basis just like they saw Manning do in college, and Luck was struggling in the Preseason, I doubt he'd be starting the first game, just like Rivers didn't. Cam is, not just because he needs "experience", but because the Panthers need all questions answered before next years Draft.

If you don't want to hear it, tough.

By the way, Luck is as big and as strong as Newton, and ran as well when he needed to, but because his passing ability and grasp of a pro-style offense was his two main strengths, they wouldn't have felt the need to rush him.

P.S. Just because you see the name "Luck" in a post, doesn't mean that post is about. This is still about the Panthers, and why they're doing what they're doing, duh.

After reading this garble if you consider yourself a logician you need to consider a new line of work.

If we have the number one pick next year we likely still won't have Luck on our team and probably a poo load of picks from trading back.

Plus who is to say that Luck even comes out next year?? He is only a Junior in terms of eligibility. We all know how much he loves college.

Your personal understanding of what is said doesn't dictate whether or not it makes sense. You're leaving out key factors.

if the team is sitting at #1, and Cam showed great promise, then now, Luck will not be on the team, but if Cam either got injured before showing anything, or survived the season and completed only 40% of his passes for the season, then Luck will be drafted. If you don't think so, that's just you hoping. I don't care whether they draft him or not, I'm just telling you how the Panthers will decide, based on them actually wanting Luck last Draft.

Luck is a Senior. He had a redshirt year, but he's still a Senior at Stanford, along with the guys who were in his Freshmen class, who he claims he returned to school for. He won't be going back to Stanford.

Oh! I get it now!! If we suck and have he #1 pick and Cam is major reason why we are in that position, you think we will take Luck. Cool. I'm glad you're here to lay out that scenario for me. I would've never thought of that idea. Just ground breaking.

I repeat: If they let him run wild, they'll do it because they plan on drafting Andrew Luck next Draft.

If Cam survives, and thrives even a little, the Panthers won't be in a position to draft Luck. If he fails, or gets injured, then they have their excuse when they're sitting back at #1 next season.

It's not complicated. If Cam fails or succeeds, it's a win/win situation for the organization. If he fails miserably, and like Clausen, shows that there's no chance he'll ever be worth it, they get Luck, their QB of the future. If he succeeds, they've got their QB of the future.

But letting him run a lot, increases the chances he'll get injured, but with the line as bad as it is, he'll be running for his life anyway.

If you look at it that way then sure its a win-win but I doubt that is what the coaching staff has in mind.

However 3 qbs in the top 2 rounds 3 years in a row creating a media circua may hardly be construed as a win-win by some.

You set yourself a can't lose argument; eventhough, it is the furthest thing from the truth. A few huge flaws in your argument, but I'm not wasting my time so you can talk in circles.

It seems pretty clear to me that they've restricted Newton from running in the preseason 1) to prevent injury 2) to not provide any more scouting material then they have to and 3) as a developmental tactic

Most folks misunderstand what it meant to "game plan" for the 3rd preseason game... it didn't mean we were going to lift up our skirt and show the rest of the NFL how babies are made, it just meant we were going to install some basic offensive and defensive plays to address what the Bengals had put on tape thus far (which wasn't much either). You could see in the 3rd preseason game that they gave Cam the green light to scramble a little more aggressively and the results were pretty good.

Given the transition Cam is making, it doesn't surprise me that they first want to develop him as a pocket passer before they allow him to use his athleticism. The fear is if they allow him to run at this stage, it will hinder his development as a passer because he will become dependent on his athleticism when things start to break down instead of standing tall in the pocket and searching for a target (see Vick in the ATL)

The moral of the story? Patience my children, this is a process and I don't think we've shown 10% of what we plan to do on offense yet.

Great post. Too soon to rep you again.

Coming up with a scenario, and playing it off as fact. Not sure that is how a true Oralcle would portray themselves.

By logician, I mean, I'm focused on what makes sense, not from my own personal perspective, but from trying to consider everything that can be considered on the issue.

Most people who post only post what they think based on how they would behave if they were deciding what the Panthers do, which is why they think that what I'm saying means I'm "hating" on Newton, because they're transferring their tendencies onto me, leading them to believe I'm saying the Panthers would do this because they think I would if I were the Panthers, or saying that the Panthers "should".

I'm basing what I'm saying on plenty of factors, such as the Panthers wanting a "franchise quarterback"; all of the talk on Charlotte radio earlier this year that made it clear that almost everyone in Charlotte wanted Luck including the Panthers front office (you could hear it in their voices before he said he wasn't coming out); about the fact that these are smart people on the coaching staff and building a winner requires thinking ahead even though they always use the "game by game" or "day to day" cliches; about a new precedent sort of being set with Clausen of making a decision on a guy after one season; about the fact that the Panthers are a business and would be making a "business" decision if they ended up with the top pick again, so how would a "business man" likely decide in that scenario.

Ever notice how nearly all athletes and coaches repeat similar cliches about "getting better", and "taking it one step at a time", and "he's our guy", blah, blah, blah? Anytime an athlete is being interviewed on Talk Radio, I turn it off, because them saying the same thing that every other athlete whose ever been interviewed on that show has said, drives me crazy. If everyone's saying the same thing, you know it's not really what they think. You're clearly trained in how not to say much.

This is not about love or hate for me like it is for most "fans". The Panthers have a plan, and they're sticking to it. It's much more interesting to discuss what that plan might be, and it's not limited to "Cam is our guy", despite what they say in public. They'll take Luck in a heartbeat if Cam crashes and burns and they can.

"They" will.

I don't think any of us will know what this team is, until game 8, as I've said before.

I don't care how this team wins, as long as it does and if tha means that Newton is the second coming of Bobby Douglas and scores and we win that way great, if he can get passes off behind that god awful, over paid line, great. If its the combination of the two wonderful...I would think setting one's feet with the line I've seen in preseason, well, if I were Newton, I would be running for my life, something Clausen couldn't do.

Let's face, Cam is gifted, he is a different athlete. He is never, ever going to look like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady; but, frankly, as long as the team wins and is compettive, I really don't care how we do it, or he does it.

If circumstances led to a scenario where the Panthers drafted Luck next season, either Clausen or Cam would be gone. No way they keep all those guys around. Both would probably be gone, so it wouldn't really be that big a deal how many they drafted in 3 years.

Most of the media wouldn't care either, since they consider Luck a "sure thing". Some would criticize it, but the consensus would be it's understandable.

The business decision in that scenario would be either trading our pick for a kings ransom or drafting Luck and trading his rights for a kings ransom. The only way the organization takes Luck a year after picking QB #1 overall is if Newton sustains a career ending injury.

As much as I support Cam, if you're sitting there with the # 1 overall pick again next year and Luck is on the board, I think you have to strongly consider taking him.

In the past, the financial commitment you had to make to a QB with the # 1 overall pick prevented this kind of thing, but in this new CBA it's not nearly as big of an investment so it's feasible to drafting a QB # 1 overall 2 years in a row.

I think it all comes down to how Cam looked during the season that earned you the # 1 overall pick. If he shows flashes of potential greatness, then it makes sense to stick with him and pass on Luck.

    • You and I both know there isn't a coach we could or can still hire that can "fix" Bryce Young. Even at mighty Alabama with one of the best modern coaches in college football history Mac Jones was still a better QB than Bryce Young. Mac Jones.... We already know how you feel about Canales on a personal level so in that regard you wanting him fired is not news. You don't have to disguise it behind this shroud of rabble about not fixing Bryce Young. To his credit he somehow had us competive against the Chiefs and the Eagles on the road with #9. But no coaching staff can overcome their starting QB turning the ball over 4 times. We definitely have developed some of our younger offensive pieces. And as far as Evero goes he has earned criticism and if he's fired so be it but in his defense many of us said in the offseason this defensive roster was a disaster waiting to happen given the resources we spent on the offense while neglecting the defense. That was Dan Morgan's plan. He swung too hard toward offense to salvage the Bryce Young trade. That's on him. We can scream about XL all we want but at least he's actually been on the field for the most part. The Brooks pick was a luxury pick at the time and now it is a Hurney level blunder. Dan Morgan has gotten a lot of early praise here when in reality he's unequivocally deserving of significant criticism. But if you say that some people get up in arms because he's a former Panther. Big whoop. He has just as much to prove this upcoming season as Canales. That's why to me in my own personal opinion I say one more season and then if it's more of the same say goodbye to both.
    • It's a decent vid with compelling reasons for his opinion. But, my thing is is that you simply can't draft McMillan thinking he is a surefire WR1. There are questions. His 40---rightly or wrongly---will play a part. I'd think that his splits (which will speak more to his game translating to the pros in my mind) are more important.  As much as you're trying to sell us that McMillan is a don't-overthink-it-type-of-player, I wouldn't say that's the case. Workouts will play a part in all of this.  At this point, I like the thought of Tetairoa. That's as much as I can give you right now.
