Pat Yasinskas "unleash Newton"

that espni article was good (unless you think that anything positive said about newton is nuthugging fluff).

i thought there was a god bit of truth to this...many peopl have criticized him as a passer. but then when you point out that he was one of the most efficient passers and that he was able to be among the most productive passers re: TDs and yardage despite having less throwing attempts , the critics will say that it was a result of him being a running threat and for some reason that meant that he wasn't a good QB and he could never be one. they also said that since there hasn't been a QB like him to succeed, that meant that he couldn't.

the truth is, there really hasn't been another cam newton which is what this article points out. with the offense making use of his strengths as a runner and if he can become even an average passing QB, he could be elite, esp. using TQBR.

btw...i agree with the comments the author made about taking snaps from the shotgun. no longer does it mean that real QBs take the majority of their snaps from under center. most of the top QBs last year took over 50% of their passing snaps from the shotgun. as the league becomes more of a pass heavy league, taking snaps from the shotgun is going to become much more prominent.

I am honestly tired of this 'he is the first Cam Newton' stuff. All he is, is a taller, bigger version of Vick period. And NFL players dont' give a damn, they will put his ass in a hospital just as fast as they would Vick or Rothlesburger.

To be a QUARTERBACK in the NFL you must learn to take your drops, deliver the ball on time and on target to your targets. Running no matter who you are is about the 4th or 5th option.

People say 'play to his strengths' well then put his ass at TE and let him play to his strengths, if he is going to be a QB then learn to be a QB. The NFL will NEVER change enough that these 'dual threat' guys will be the norm or overly successful, physics and bio-mechanics just says it isn't going to happen.

So if this kid wants to be an NFL QB then learn to read defenses and throw the ball. But hey 'let him loose' and lets see how long he survives in the NFL. I say he is on IR by week 12.

Now I really think we blew it with the #1 pick. We already had a great stable of running backs. Why waste a draft pick on another one. Hurney must go.

JR isn't stupid, he needed butts in the stands and Newton would put them there. With how cheaply he got newton he can cut him even next year and write it off. He won't but you get my point. It was win win for Richardson.

The whole argument about him being a running threat isn't to say that he was a bad QB, but his running ability helps make him look like a better passer than he may really be. When teams are selling out to stop the run, most QBs can hit a wide open WR.

It seems pretty clear to me that they've restricted Newton from running in the preseason 1) to prevent injury 2) to not provide any more scouting material then they have to and 3) as a developmental tactic

Most folks misunderstand what it meant to "game plan" for the 3rd preseason game... it didn't mean we were going to lift up our skirt and show the rest of the NFL how babies are made, it just meant we were going to install some basic offensive and defensive plays to address what the Bengals had put on tape thus far (which wasn't much either). You could see in the 3rd preseason game that they gave Cam the green light to scramble a little more aggressively and the results were pretty good.

Given the transition Cam is making, it doesn't surprise me that they first want to develop him as a pocket passer before they allow him to use his athleticism. The fear is if they allow him to run at this stage, it will hinder his development as a passer because he will become dependent on his athleticism when things start to break down instead of standing tall in the pocket and searching for a target (see Vick in the ATL)

The moral of the story? Patience my children, this is a process and I don't think we've shown 10% of what we plan to do on offense yet.

Some Panther fans are amazing.

not they same kind of runners. And no they wont hurt his as easy as vick. Judging the way the nfl treats smaller runners like sproles and qiz rodgers, scat backs are treated as 2 small to be work horse runners. But, if your over say 220 they feel your able to carry the ball 20 times a game. No there has never been a QB as big and as mobile as cam so yes this is a first. Just because you put a QB before his name doesnt make him a smaller more fragile man.

I say let him get his feet wet. there has never been a Power rushing qb this size. think of the brandon jacobs of QBs. a complete freak.

So under this theory, how do you explain the punishment Ben has been able to absorb as compared to Vick?

Well if all else fails and he gets hurt we still have Clausen and Anderson. I threw up a little in my mouth as I typed that. Maybe that's why he shouldn't run so much.

I repeat: If they let him run wild, they'll do it because they plan on drafting Andrew Luck next Draft.

If Cam survives, and thrives even a little, the Panthers won't be in a position to draft Luck. If he fails, or gets injured, then they have their excuse when they're sitting back at #1 next season.

It's not complicated. If Cam fails or succeeds, it's a win/win situation for the organization. If he fails miserably, and like Clausen, shows that there's no chance he'll ever be worth it, they get Luck, their QB of the future. If he succeeds, they've got their QB of the future.

But letting him run a lot, increases the chances he'll get injured, but with the line as bad as it is, he'll be running for his life anyway.

Please stop talking about Andrew fugging Luck.

I honestly don't have faith that they are this smart but you are right nonetheless.
