Pat Yasinskas "unleash Newton"

TBH I dont want to see him run a god awful amount because the LBs in the NFL will beat him up but if the option is there by all means do it!!! I much rather let him sit in the gun and show teams he can be a NFL passer at least in the gun for the short term.

that espni article was good (unless you think that anything positive said about newton is nuthugging fluff).

i thought there was a god bit of truth to this...

When Newton was taken No. 1 overall, it really wasn't the second Vick-type pick at that spot, the latest runner-slash-passer who had to evolve. It was the first Cam Newton. Vick is a gifted athlete who can throw the ball, but because of his 6-foot, 210-pound frame, he terrifies his coaches when he takes hits as a runner. He's played 16 games in only one of his eight NFL seasons. Newton is a gifted athlete who can throw the ball, but he's 4 inches taller than Ray Lewis and about the same weight. Comparing Vick to Newton isn't apples and oranges, but Newton is a much, much bigger apple.

According to Total QBR, both of those runs last week were of great value, because of clutch-weighting. Both were third-down runs that picked up first downs and increased the Panthers' expected point total. In the case of the touchdown run, it also increased the actual point total. Newton will develop as a passer, but right now, the newer measurements of quarterback value recognize that yards are yards. Newton isn't a good running quarterback because he can pick up key yards with his feet, he's a good quarterback, just as Josh Freeman and Aaron Rodgers were last year as the league's best scrambling QBs.

many peopl have criticized him as a passer. but then when you point out that he was one of the most efficient passers and that he was able to be among the most productive passers re: TDs and yardage despite having less throwing attempts , the critics will say that it was a result of him being a running threat and for some reason that meant that he wasn't a good QB and he could never be one. they also said that since there hasn't been a QB like him to succeed, that meant that he couldn't.

the truth is, there really hasn't been another cam newton which is what this article points out. with the offense making use of his strengths as a runner and if he can become even an average passing QB, he could be elite, esp. using TQBR.

btw...i agree with the comments the author made about taking snaps from the shotgun. no longer does it mean that real QBs take the majority of their snaps from under center. most of the top QBs last year took over 50% of their passing snaps from the shotgun. as the league becomes more of a pass heavy league, taking snaps from the shotgun is going to become much more prominent.

I'm just asking where are his critics on this board? There are obviously experts everywhere on this site, they've disappeared for some VERY odd reason.

Every criticism of Newton still stands, regardless of whatever bullshit reason ESPN's new QBR comes up with.

I've been thinking about this and, assuming the coaching staff knows what it's doing, it doesn't make any sense for them to expect him to run the offense the way they've been doing in the preseason. It makes more sense (strategically and developmentally) to hide their real intentions for him and to give him game practice running stuff they'll want him to eventually. Due to the shortened training camp schedules, those preseason games were basically glorified scrimmages.

I'm not expecting it because it's too perfect, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they came out with a completely different game plan against Arizona. "You expected us to pass? HAHA! triple option time bitch."

I agree completely....

my only fear is come week 1.....they continue trying to make him a pocket QB and downplay his absurd strength.

I just want him to progress by any means necessary. Im not really a fan of him starting day one but it seems he is going to anyway so I hope the coaching staff plays to his ability and not try to force him into a system like John Fox was notorious for. If he is as successful as Josh Freeman his first year I will be happy.

true, just like criticism of the team as a whole.

until yardage is gained, TDs are scored, and games are won cam newton and the panthers have done nothing to prove the criticsms are wrong.

that can only really happen in regular season games.

aside from my wanting him to start day 1, i totally agree with everything you said.

esp..the thoughts about john fox.

ths coaching staff really seems to be big on the idea of building around existing talent unlike fox's desire to fit every player into the same mold regardless of strengths and weaknesses.

play to his strengths. that's what all the teams who have successfully groomed QBs have and will do.

QUARTERBACKS is the key, not dual threat guys who want to sub as running backs.

Those that successfully groomed QB's had them learn to take their drops, and deliver the ball on time and on target. If they have mobility then sure run if ALL other options aren't open.

Yaz is another idiot that thinks the NFL is NCAA.
