Newton: "It's About Trusting The System"

Good post.

The mechanics issue is overblown. The most prolific QB in our team history had poor mechanics. That doesnt mean Cam doesnt need to work on them and be more consistent, but I think people are blowing the mechanics issue up because he hasnt thrown picks and looked totally lost out there. Guarantee if he had thrown a couple of picks by now we'd be hearing more about that then his "back foot" throws.

First off, most quarterbacks have to throw off their back foot when they are getting pressured. They also have to side arm it, toss it, and other things to make a play. He doesn't do it when he has time and can step up in his throws. Too much is being made of it.

What he is talking about is knowing where a receiver is going to be and throwing to a spot trusting that the receiver is going to be there to make a play. If you watch his throws many of them are arriving late because he is waiting for the receiver to get open before he throws. By the time the ball gets there, the defender has closed on the receiver and can easily make a play on the ball. You could see that with Smitty on several occasions in the last game. Smitty was open for a moment but by the time Cam found him and threw it, he wasn't open anymore.

That is what he means by trusting the system. It was also the main issue with Newton at the combine where he was used to throwing to a receiver not a spot on a timing route. That is a much bigger issue for Cam at this point. Plus if he throws on a timing route instead of holding the ball until someone clears, he is much more likely not to be pressured which results in many of the back foot throws.

This actually makes the most sense. I think it's about him trusting his 1st and 2nd reads before panicking and hitting the checkdown or scrambling.

No, it is about knowing where the receiver is supposed to be and throwing the ball before he breaks on the route and throwing to a spot and trusting the receiver will be there. He didn't do that much at Auburn.

Didn't realize there were so many coaches, football, QB mechanic experts on this site. WOW.

Yes Cam, forget what u and the coaches have figured out is the problem in the filmroom, u should just listen to the pretend experts on these chat-sites.

I didn't know either. Shouldnt be on here but on a football team teaching these QB's

They didnt become that way until we got Cam. You could've put Pee Wee Herman out there as our QB in years past and you wouldnt see this micro-analyzing of the position from fans. Like I said, Cam Newton has brought standards to the QB position in Carolina. There were none prior to April.

good reason for him to get more reps. the more time he spends getting used to the offense, the better for the team. the same with the Oline and the rest of the players. they need to be developing trust/familiarity with him.

btw...i don't think he is saying that mechanics isn't an issue. it's obvious that it is. he just believes that trusting the system and the offense will help him with it.

whatever....it will happen with time and the more he works with the first team, the better prepared he will be and the quicker he will grow.
