Newton: "It's About Trusting The System"

I have a buddy who we'll call TRDMDHTTRMRSCTGRG to protect his true identity, who was agaisnt the idea of us drafting Newton. Sometimes he lets his emotions get in the way of the bigger picture such as being a panthers fan, not an indvidual player fan or having hatred for indvidual player. Just because we have one player he does not like he constantly tries to belittle him and argues that he should not start not taking into consideration how unbearable a 2nd season of Clausen would be again.

The funny thing is I swear this friend is more afraid of Cam having success and having it early than he is afraid of us losing games because of him.

That must suck to be a panther fan like him and have the team putting the faith of their franchise in the hands of a player he despises.

Considering:

Rookie QB

Third system in 3 years

One year of D1 football

Massively shortened off-season

Spread/shotgun QB

I'm pretty ok with his biggest knocks being accuracy and footwork. All you heard around draft time were questions on if he'd be able to take snaps from center, if he'd have any type of work ethic after getting endorsements and a fat contract, if he'd be smart enough to digest an NFL playbook and if he'd be able to make more than one read before taking off running. Yes, yes, yes and yes so far. The rest will come.

Add to that the fact that he's maybe a hair behind Clausen (who supposedly make a big jump) and given everything that's going on and I can't be but so negative about where he's at right now.

You know, a QB saying he has to trust the system is about the most uncontroversial thing he can do.

The fact that Cam made the statement and it has this many pages of posts about it tells me he is going to be the most polarizing figure in panthers history.

Is going to be?

Cam's footwork is bad under pressure....his fundamentals aren't that bad.

also keep in mind, we have yet to see Cam play what ideally will be our offensive scheme. Running the ball remotely well does have an impact on pass protection. Having Cam drop back almost every play highlights the entire teams weaknesses......not just Cam's.

Not that I disagree with you but the point still stands...The expectations are, and should be high. He will, and should, live under a telescope. Everything he does will be analyised to death...and it should be.

HE WAS THE NUMBER 1 PICK IN DRAFT; not some 6th round "prospect". #1 overall draft picks are drafted to come in and make the team better, not for the team to make that person better. If we had a good team we wouldn't be getting the #1 draft pick to begin with...so while on a better TEAM things may be different may be true...fact of the matter is, he isn't and his job is to make the team better...not blame his faults on the team he is here to help

For that to be true would validate alot of the things Ive said on this site over the past 5 years. And dudes were emphatic that wasnt the case. Lets hope for all of our sakes it isnt. The team itself has stepped up and accepted Newt as one of us and not some "outsider", hopefully the majority of the fanbase will do the same over time.

Can we please stop acting like Cam Newton is bigger than the team itself. The most polarizing figure in our francise history? GTFO he hasn't touched the field yet, by your definition since preseason doesn't matter. Sorry to break it to you, but Cam is just another number on the roster.

So it was the defense that stopped ARZ from scoring and not Big Ben finding Holmes in the endzone. Wow i must have watched the wrong game.

I guess the 100 yard interception by Harrison that turned around the game with no time left in the first half was because of big Ben right??

Every player in this draft was a reach at #1. Newton was the smallest reach by a long shot.

I have to respectfully disagree. He may have the most potential but there were 5 to 10 players that actually showed more skill than he did on the field...and they have shown more skill than he has thus far during preseason. Where they all end up is anyones guess but I can't say he was the smartest choice for #1 pick.

this board is evidence that your statement is false.

can't agree.....Cam was probably the best and most skilled athlete in the draft.

Big difference between asking Cam to learn and lead this offense from the QB position........and what you ask for a DT. One has a simple job, one has a very complex job. One should be ahead of the other by a pretty big margin at this point.......

Cam definitely had the most upside.

He was nowhere near the safest pick.

He is the poster child for risk-reward pick.

Sorry but i know someone very close to me who was falsely accused and beat the rap. But back on topic. Cam must work from the pocket to be a successful quarterback in the NFL.

And I know family who lives near where the case occurred and followed it closely and he definitely did it but the victim decided not to press charges due to the publicity and uproar that would have occurred. After all she was only a college student and drinking underage and by all accounts drunk so didn't want to pursue it. Still happened though.

And Newton has to be able to work on the run, in the pocket and wherever he is to be effective. But no he doesn't have to be simply a pocket passer, that would be diminishing his talent.
