Preseason Impressions: The Quarterbacks

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

We have a new HC, new OC, and DC, .....and just drafted Newton #1 overall. How are you confused?

If we are not trying to make a playoff push this year (see Eagles) then why risk ruining Cam by throwing him into a terrible situation?

If you can answer these three questions honestly with a yes, then fine, we agree to disagree.

1. Are we going to be good this year?

2. Is Cam Newton ready to be a starter in the NFL at the QB position?

3. Would it be better for Cam long term to ride the pine for year on a terrible team?

Newsflash

Derek Anderson is the best QB on our roster currently...

only b/c he hasn't played and therefore the unknown is being pimped.

Who were the worst 2 starting QBs in the NFL last year? Anderson was one.

Cam isn't as good of a passer overall as either of them....he is a better option b/c he can turn into a Mack truck when pass protection breaks down. Cam has the best deep ball on the team.

Anderon may be better week 1.....if you start Cam he could easily have progressed to a clearly better option late in the season (but those early reps are what will make that so).

B/c we drafted Cam knowing we would watch him learn and go through the growing pains (this year).

1. at times we should. at times late in the year we should not

2. No. A lot of successful QBs aren't ready when they start.

3. Bust rate is the same if you sit or start QBs right away. There isn't terrible talent on offense.......the only excuse for those around Cam have is a new scheme. Other than that, you look at offenses around the NFL exclusding the QB position from them.....Carolina is better built than many teams.

I think Cam would be fine as a passer if he were more disciplined with his mechanics at gametime. From a solid base he'd be far more accurate.

good pass protection = more time and better mechanics

when Cam uses good mechanics he is just as accurate as any of the guys on the roster.

You don't get it. We are not talking about busting. We are talking about being great.

For every Rivers and Rodgers there is Aikman and Manning. I get it, it can be done both ways. But when you invest the 1st overall pick in a QB you need to take every precaution to make sure they can do well.

Again it's just an opinion, but throwing a rook QB out there on a bad team is a terrible mistake. Your opinion is different.

Its nice that we all have our opinions and everything but the guys getting paid to make the decisions obviously think right now is the time to Start Cam. They also think he will be great in due time. Aside from RG our o-line is as about as good as anyone can reasonably expect. Our biggest problem is no number 2 reciever has created any seperation on vanilla pass routes. Offensive line should be at minimum ok with Otah back and a likely vet pickup.

If Newton gets damaged because his recievers suck or were down 1 lineman, then he never had what it takes to be the #1 overall pick in the first place.

I do not feel strongly enough to make any bold predictions on what his Success will be this year but at the same time we dont have enough information do gurantee his failure at this point either.

Lets give him some time in real game scenarios with real game planning that exploit his strengths before assuming he's not ready.

I don't necessarily disagree with the analysis of the OP except I don't know how you can say with that Derek Anderson is the best QB option on the roster right now or even the guy who should start with such limited reps he has had in practice and the preseason.

Depends on how you define "best option".

Best chance to win? You could argue that, but wins aren't important to me in a rebuilding year.

Least invested/most expendable? Hard to say that's anyone but Anderson.

Exaaaaaactly! Patience is a virtue.

True, very true and I'm a HUGE proponent of having a solid line, BUT he's made some very bad throws without people in his face. I understand he's still learning, but he needs to work on his consistency as part of his progression.

The kid has every physical tool you could ever ask for, unfortunately all of that can be negated with bad mechanics. He's made a lot of progress transitioning to a pro style offense, but it's clear he still has a way to go. You can tell he's still thinking too much about what to do instead of just doing it.
