Are Hurney and Fox delerious or are we lurking

People always say that, but let's look at the record:

2002 - Took a 1-15 team the year before to a 7-9 record, some say remarkable.

2003 - Went to the Super Bowl can't get much better than that

2004 - 7-9 with 14 starting players on IR

2005 - NFC Championship game

2006 - 8-8, again, major injuries

2007 - 7-9 Without a starting QB

2008 - 12-4

He's a damn fine coach. Yes, I know he's conservative and it drives you guys nuts when we don't blow every team out be 40 points, but he's a winner. Whenever I get frustrated with him, I take a look back at the Siefort years and I feel a lot better. Back then, we would just be happy to have a winning season. Oh how our expectations have changed, but yet so many fans think him incompetent and call for his removal. Baffles the crap out of me...

The years we have won in Carolina is also largely a product of great talent. Fox imo will always hold them back. Coaching is going to either win or lose you a couple of key games.....talent imo determines the rest. Fox has proven his stubborness, the fact he is the most conservative coach in the NFL, and his blind loyalty cost the team more than any positives he brings. Fox is just riding talent, he doesn't bring the extra factor to put the teams over the top.

They had better be looking for depth on both lines if nothing else! The cupboard is bare once you get past the starters.

we have lost some OL guys already this FA season...... i imagine we will concentrate heavily on both lines in the draft and pick up a DB before the then in FA. there are still several available.

Ok, question of the day. Are Hurney and Fox frigging delerious thinking we can sit on what we have and be a winner this upcoming year. It would seem so with the COMPLETE quiteness and lack of even entertaining visits from any free agents.

Or, are they being quite and holding there cards close to the vest intentionally. Nobody. and I mean nobody, including Kiper and all the gurus, had us trading our 1st this year to Philly last year and taking such a huge risk. That just wasn't our M.O. But we did it, and at the time everyone said we were crazy to give up so much. Well after the emergence of the Road Grader Otah and the birth of Double Trouble, 2400+ rushing yards later, we look like geniuses.

I just ask myself if maybe the sly dogs don't have something up there sleeve that nobody has picked up on. Maybe a big draft day trade with Pep, or something else.

I just find it hard to believe after there ballsy move last year and seeing the results from it, that they would think we can go into this season exactly as we were last season with no defensive improvements and win this year. And they have to feel like after the ass kicking in Arizona -if we go back to 7-9 again this year they are gone? Even after 12-4 last year.

Thoughts???

Werent we 12-4 last yr? I would take our roster over most others right now and we still have the draft comeing up and a Peppers trade. Its only March, the season doesnt start for another half a year. Making big splashes early is expected if you have a terrible team or you are the Washington Redskins.

The no cap room issue is real, though. Sure, if the right player was there, we probably could find some space, however, we have to be fiscally responsible at the same time. We simply don't have enough money to just go out and pick up a few players and see if any stick...or even one player at the cost they were demanding during the initial wave of FA.

At this point, we have to try and find bargains, that's all we can afford. But lets be honest, who was/is available that is both affordable and better than what we already have, anyway? Particularly, who could we have gotten to fill a need position that was not out of our price range?

Basically, I don't see anyone that we could have afforded who would clearly be better than what we already have on the roster. So, why sign someone just for the sake of signing someone? Personally, I think the FO has done the smart thing in waiting to get involved in the FA sweepstakes. Give me reasonable options and maybe I would feel different, but based on cost/ability ratio, I don't see anybody that would have been a good signing.

And while Hurney/Rogers sometimes seem like they can do magic with the cap, they still have their limits. Most of the cap space they could create is tied up in the 23-24 million hit taken by Gross and Peppers this year. So while there is a bit of space they could still create, it's not much (remember, they have to guard against mortgaging the future in finding space for this year), and they also have to make sure they have enough to sign the rookies...not to mention keep themselves in play for any unexpected players cut loose by their teams after the draft.

So you are upset that we have not signed anybody? Reglardless of who they are.

You want the team to juggle space to sign just anybody.....so that you will be satisfied?

Please go outside and find a freakin clue.

I think more people posting here are pissed that we have not done anything....rather than we have not done the right thing.

Ok. For all you idiots ripping me for questioning why we have been so quite, if you think we can go into this year with the same team we had last year minus the depth we had on oline, you are the ones that are clueless.

Our defense was shredded , even before the spanking in St Louis. The first few games of the year there was all the talk of how we stopped the 4 or 5 best running backs in the league and it was all down hill from there. Other teams are improving, or at least on paper, no gurantee it ends up that way but heck, we never know how its gonna turn out. But bottom line, if you are not improving, and other teams are, you are getting worse.

If you think we can play the schedule we have this upcoming year with that same porous defense that gave up 300 rushing yards to the Giants and what seems like 1000 passing yards to Larry Fitz and Kurt Warner, I would disagree with you.

So I am not saying we need to make a SPLASH, I respect all our own players we resigned, I know our salary cap situation, but I believe we will do something, whether it is a Pep trade, or something else , to address those needs.

As Einstein said, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting different results.

We gave up the yards to the Giants without EITHER of our starting DT's playing.

The biggest issue with our defense was not personnel....it was scheme. Now maybe I am being too optimistic about Meek's ability to devise a scheme that will play to the strengths of our players.

Well I agree with you on the Meek's ability to devise a scheme that will play to the strengths of our players. I read Sorenson in the Observer and he said he knows a player that played for Meeks and a assts coach that worked with him and thet he will coach to players strengths more than sticking with cover 2 or particular scheme, although cover 2 is his thing. But I still think we need some help on defense as far as personell.

Lucas is still questionable, I thought Marshall was ready to start but he got abused late in the season, If we keep Pep, which seems a possibility now, where will his head be? Can Meeks get into his head? Can Charles Johnson be a starter? The only part of our defense I really feel good about is our safeties, Harris and Godfrey I think are good, and our liebacking corps.

Not to mention the fact that Beason played half the season with basically one arm.

Has the season already started ?

So they are not sitting on what we have as of yet .

Who that has been signed already ,was even in the Panthers $$$ range ?

With Peppers & Lucas still here NO ONE

The sky has not fallen yet .

Deals and trades do happen after the first few weeks of F/A

Oh great, another one of these threads ...

Yep, I'm just glad that so many of our fans want us to be like the Saints were last year. Remember all the buzz over the signing of Vilma and Shockey, and how they were guaranteed to win the NFC South because they spent all that money and brought in all that talent?

pre season champs FTW.
