Last night proved (again) that CB is our biggest need

I am not that big on statistics but for the argument’s sake I took a look at defensive stats. I compared sacks to pass defense and vice versa. According to the adage, I figured that those teams that had the most sacks would also rank high in pass defense. I know sacks aren’t the only way to define pressure but the NFL doesn’t record quarterback hurries. Below are two tables that show the relationship, or lack thereof, between the two stats (2010 season).

Steelers 48.....12

Packers 47.....5

Raiders 47..... 2

Chargers 47.....1

Giants 46....9

Lions 44.....16

Rams 43.....19

First number beside name is # of sacks, second number team rank is pass defense.

There isn’t that strong of a correlation between to two stats. So to say that nabbing a defensive tackle would do wonders for our cornerback position would be an overstatement. The best decision to make would be to upgrade our corners.

All I am saying is that DT might help the run defense but I really don't think it does any good for a secondary. The run defense doesn't rest all on the DTs though. It rests on the DEs, LBs and safeties as well. With our attacking/blitzing defense a lot of the burden will be on the CBs, and they haven't proven to be able to handle the job, even Gamble to an extent.

High sacks are a function of blitzing most of the time which exposes the secondary, agreed. While not high, none of those of defense were horrible, 19th being the worst, so I'm not sure I the the disconnect. We can't get pressure with our front 4 is my point, so our CBs are going to be exposed even when we don't blitz. Let's say the picked up Nnamdi this year, with the way our D-line, tackles namely are playing, can you honestly say there would be a ton of difference? No, because you can scheme away from one player.

Truly I would have expected that if the adage said great pass rush makes secondary better, I would have expected that between those teams that 10 or 11 (top third) would be the highest. That's where I see the disconnect. It's not a sure fire way to help.

And to put all the blame on the DTs for the rush defense is crazy. Especially when the majority of the runs were outside. Not defending the DTs in anyway, they need a lot of help. But more people can cover for them than helping the CBs out there on the island. Nnamdi would do wonders for this team. And to say there wouldn't be a difference is crazy. Safties could help in the run game that much more. Safeties have their eyes in the backfield and if they don't trust their corners they might be more prone to help cover the receivers.

Now AJ Green is a BEAST. Not taking that away from him... and He wouldnt have been a bad pick.

Buuuut... if we would have picked AJ Green...chances are, D-Will and Steve Smith are gone... and Jimmy Clausen has no competition to get better.

Drafting not only ignited our fanbase, but itwas huge in helping us get our current players back. Move on please. We made the right move.

Pure and utter speculation. Those players either said they loved Charlotte and wanted to stay (Smitty) or got fatter contracts than others were able or willing to give (FAs).
