Gross: There Was A Rhythm To The Offense

In this video they (Rivera and Brandt) discuss a comment that Gross made about their being a sense of rhythm to the offense within the huddle. Rivera said he sensed that as well and said that although you didn't see that fluidity and rhythm in results on the field necessarily, it showed to the staff/players.

How low are expectations this year, lol? Obviously, 6 of 19 isn't going to cut it, but if our WRs caught the balls that hit them in the hands you can add about 4-5 more completions onto that total. Still, Cam did miss some throws badly, but any knowledgeable fan can tell there are a whole lot more problems than anything Cam did or didn't do last night.

It all starts with the lines... Still, "rhythm" and "fluidity" aren't terms I would associate with what we saw last night... It's gonna be a long season and I'm fine with letting Cam play and progress, but we REALLY need to address both lines ASAP with whatever we can find at this point.

I get the distinct feeling like this coaching staff is working their way towards a pretty short tenure here....

when you install a new O and D scheme in a regular offseason....teams generally look lost early.

If you do it in a locked out and shortened offseason....what we are seeing is going to happen.

were there really 4-5 dropped balls in the first half? I saw someone claim that deep ball to Smitty was a drop where he leapt in the air and the defender batted it away was a drop... Is that one of the ones you're talking about? What were the others?

I watch the game on a low resolution stream so it can be hard to see when the ball is that close.

I'm not discounting that but I don't like the "there was a rhythm to the offense" kind of statement/excuse. There just isn't a real good excuse for what happened last night, IMO. I guess I would like to see some scathing, Bill Parcells style comments.

Exactly. The lockout virtually assured Rivera that he geta total free pass this year. Everyone has said that the lockout really handicapped teams with new staffs and schemes. No one expect much of anything this year except the critics on this board. Reality is going to hit a bunch of them pretty hard this year.

Not in the first half...

Throughout the game, I'd have to go back and look at it, but Smitty dropped one early that hit him in the hands with no defender on him as he was running to the sidelines (it came out ugly though).

Olsen dropped another.

Can't remember the exact play the other one happened on, and then Smitty letting the defender go through him. Smitty had the chance to grab it and pull it down but it hit his hands, he dropped it, then defender ran through and roughed him up.

So there are 3 right there, and I'm sure there was at least one other. I'll have to go back and look at it again to make sure.

But, that's still not my focus. His missed passes and completion % is the least of our worries right now. How many times did his play bail us out on 3rd and 10+ because of horrible playcalling combined with horrible execution on the previous two plays by the OL?

I really don't expect people to talk negatively about Rivera this year, no matter how bad we do except for fair weather fans. Most people with any football sense knows this is going to be a rough year, though it looks to be more rough than even some of us were expecting. I literaly lol'd in the season prediction threads when the homers were giving us anything close to a .500 or even a winning record this year. At this point, even my 5 win estimate is looking iffy.

    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.

    • Heels let another team go up 20 on them but this time they complete the comeback. HD never seems to have his team ready but he makes great halftime adjustments. Powell played the majority of the second half and his defense was the difference along with his big three pointer to give the Heels the lead for good. Trimble and Davis were also spectacular. Carolina can’t let Auburn get out to a 20 point lead though, they won’t be able to come back from that.
