Cam is not ready

The Saltman

Newton will be fine. He has looked very composed throughout. At this point he has had no help. The running game is AWOL and pass protection has been horrible. We have noone who can get open. The D can't get off the field. Getting rolled by Cincy the way the D got rolled is a very bad sign.

I agree, it's as if he's trying to be something that he's not out there.

There's nothing wrong with running for 493930 yards a game, as long as a rookie he's progressing as a QB and always working on his mechanics.

I just want Cam to play like he knows how. When he was scrambling, and stepping into his throws, throwing bullets was when I was most impressed.

I know he has pressure, but he needs to have a little fun out there.

That has stood out to me as well, and I have to wonder if he's under instructions not to play loose, and specifically not to run during the preseason.

If Cam was so hyped then why are u folks so parniod about him even thou you keep saying that he has a higher ceiling than Jimmy the kid who u automatically trusted even thou his preseason game wasn't all that much better than Cam's.

Cam was never really HYPED...Being labeled and stereotyped in every negative way isn't my idea of being hyped.

Cam was just talked about a lot by the elite sports crowd for the sake of attention. U know...like some freak of nature or a specimen.

Never trusted Jimmy automatically. Cam is HYPED by the media. He was hyped during college football season, after college football season, during the draft, after the draft, and now. What do you hear on TV when they talk about the Carolina Panthers? Cam Newton. That's the main person you hear about. Get your head out of the sand.

"Being labeled and stereotyped in every negative way??? "

Lol

It makes sense to sit him for at least part of the season if we have no chance of being good, and he has no chance of making things better. Put a guy like Anderson, who has no role in our future, in there for the time being and in the meanwhile, we can can all salivate for the arrival of Cam.

if cam didn't have a grasp of the playbook or the concepts of what we want to do, then i sit him until he is ready. cam needs all the reps he can get, you can't duplicate the situations he will see on the field.

Sitting him prolly isn't gonna make him any better, and he seems like someone who's made of tougher stuff to take a beating(never really looks like he get's hurt from the pass rush so far..) i'm sure his head is just swimming with progressions and blitz pickup and stuff..things he never had to do in college. It's also going to be hard to sit him when a lot of the playbook currently revolves around his running ability. And maybe the team can start rallying around the young man and start figuring out how to play in the new system at some point.

Why not start Cam?

Because he is trying to do too much and doesn't yet have the game down enough to be effective without a lot of help.

Until we can sort out some of the o-line/running game problems, our QB is going to be a sacrificial lamb.

Do you want Cam to be put in that situation? Do you want yet more abuse heaped on Jimmy? Let DA play and take his lumps. It may not be entirely fair for him but it will at least be a chance for him to resurrect his career.

Cam will be just fine playing now or later. he is going to struggle but if he has the mental toughness & drive he will get through it, if not then we'll be looking for another qb 3 or 4 years from now

Starting him under these conditions may make him worse.

It's roughly the equivalent of teaching a kid to drive on the streets of Beirut.

All the mental toughness in the world won't protect you from building bad habits when all your reps come under lousy conditions.

He's got enough of a transition ahead of him already. I say don't make it even harder.

I also shudder at the speculation Hurney might go at the Eagles for a corner back.

We're gonna get hosed.

I'm not the world's biggest Assante Samuel fan. There are reasons why the Eagles were looking to upgrade this offseason.

Is he better than what we have behind Gamble now? Yeah, but that doesn't necessarily mean trading what it would likely take to get him is a good move.

Joselio Hanson? As a starter? Not so sure there either.

The Panthers have played the "one man's trash is another man's treasure" card plenty of times in the past. Sometimes it works, but not always.

99% chance all the guys clamoring for Asante are the same ones cursing Hurney for trading the #1 pick in the 2nd round for Armanti.

Realistically, we'll be picking top 5. We don't want to give up a mid-30s pick for an aging cornerback that is rumored to have issues with our defensive coordinator..

& if he sits now his footwork & other things might look great in practice but want mean much of anything until he can duplicate it in game situatons.

That's the argument I've been making since before we drafted him, but I didn't think we were as bad as we appear to be, and any guy, even as thick-skinned as Newton, can only take so much. I'm flip-flopping on that one.

As a side note, if we get both Armanti and Assante, David Letterman will have material for a new routine should he host the Oscars again.

(that joke was so obscure it could have been on MST 3000)
