Kentwan Balmer claimed off waivers

Name one. EDwards is/was/will never be anything special. Many fans on this sight wanted to do more to upgrade the DL. Its a huge problem and some middle of the road DT (Edwards) and a scrub (Balmer) isn't going to change things.

So the Panthers are stuck with what they got, nothing.

If Carolina can go from horrible to decent.....that would be a noticeable improvement. You don't need Suh to improve from pathetic

very true. having someone like suh would be great...but that isn't going to happen. he's truly a once in a decade type talent.

for the defense to work we just need DTs that are going to occupy blockers and stop the running between the tackles. maybe a little push up the middle.

this defense will be pretty solid if we have just that and you don't need elite talent to get that. very well could be that someone like balmer could be the right fit and could fit nicely in the rotation.

My only complaint with the waiver selection is having to hear carowhina fans rationalize why this guy hasn't panned out.

He was stuck as a 3-4 DE because he has 3-4 DE size. He is tall with some bulk. The facts tell the story. He has played for 2 different teams in 3 years, started a good number of games last year without recording a sack, and has now been cut early into the cut cycle by a team without a plethora of DEs. At this point he is a reclamation project with some upside but is unlikely to help out in any meaningful way.

Since when are 3-4 DEs known for getting sacks? Sacks are not everything especially for a 3-4 D lineman.

it's worth a shot. what harm can it do? it's not like he's being handed the starting gig and it's not like we have tons of talent ahead of him either.

dude was miscast in a 3-4 (much like brayton was). we've done well with WW scrubs in the past. why not? it's not like any of you clowns already calling him a turd actually know what you are talking about anyway.

panthers picked him up and there were several teams that were trying to get him as well. probably all of them 4-3 teams thinking that he could do well in his natural position. i guarantee all of them know more than any of you complaining about this move.

if they think it's worth giving him a shot, then i'm on board. if he works out...awesome. if not...who cares? it's not like it cost the team much.

btw...not a tarheel fan.

no no no!

you need big highly talented guys in the middle. you need to spend every first round pick you have on DL. THAT'S HOW YOU WIN GAMES. Because defense wins championships, and it starts and ends at the line of scrimmage. How do you expect to get penetration with later round draft picks? If you can't get penetration you're not going to rush the passer. IF you can't rush the passer he'll pick apart your corners. If he picks apart your corners you're going to lose! How do you get penetration? YOU GOTTA GET GUYS LIKE FAIRLEY AND DAREUS. We should have taken Dareus no.1 and traded Smith, Stewart and Kalil to Jacksonville for their no. 10 pick and taken Fairley! Now without these guys we are doomed to get gashed up the middle for the next 3 years. Sione Fua sucks. Terrell McClain sucks. They'll never be any good because they're third round talent.

Sure, but you can't fix all the problems in offseason, especially when that offseason is only a few weeks long. If Newton works out, then I imagine we will address both DT and CB in next year's draft/free agency period. And fwiw, its likely that at least one of our two draft picks will become a solid player for us.

Bring in J. Williams and Tank. Cut Irvin and Hayden. Fua and McClain backups until they are ready to step in. Did Tony Brown get picked up? Havent really followed.

Why would you cut a guy who seems to be impressing the coaches in Irvin?

There's also a reason Tank was cut and is still unemployed. I want J Williams as much as anyone, but I trust the coaching staff's judgement and also assume they're not looking for stop gap measures. They know this is a learning season for everyone, IMO.

Lol drafted by buffalo will dam if they didn't want to keep him around. Jeez dog i've looked at the pro bowl / all pro lists over the years and no dice. The guy is just a warm body. Snatched? wtf does that mean? You'd think a DT starved team like KC had wanted to keep this guy they would have.

I dig your sig, but your recent analysis has been pooty lately.

Edwards was brought in as a solid contributor while our young guns developed. You can't go Washington Redskins to fix every hole on your team in FA in one offseason. Our plan is to build through the draft and plug holes on FA. Edwards was that buttplug for us before he tore his triceps.

If you're about signing big names, go cheer for the Eagles or Redskins and go be let down along with those fan bases.

Couple of observations, waiver claims used to mean we inherit the contract/cap hit from previous team. Did that change in the new CBA? Once they clear waivers is where you get the deals. Would be curious to see cap hit but doubt it is more than a blip. But being #1 on waiver wire means you have to pass up a lot of players due to contract structure.

Also, at the risk of getting slammed..... I saw Hayden make some good plays in the first half, early 2nd half of preseason game 2.

Hayden has steadily gotten better to be fair, but I have no interest in keeping him.

Darin Gantt said we will pay him approx 700k if he plays 16 games.

Salary/Bonus hits are being toted by Seahawks and Niners.
