Jerry Richardson to Cam: No Tattoos, No Piercings

Correct on the first part, wrong on the second. They drafted Clausen last year expecting him to be the franchise QB, and they said so last year. So why didn't JR have this same talk with him? Jimmy had as many perceived character issues as Cam did.

So Jerry was expecting Clausen to be our franchise QB?

Why does it matter now? Do you think Cam is being treated unfairly because of a certain reason?

lol

Fail

But both of those commercials are takeoffs on football similar to the hair commercials. My point is that he doesn't have wide appeal as a marketing person outside of the hair or football. Does he hawk cars, air travel, or other products outside of the small realm of football or shampoo. He is not the face of the franchise nor do people outside of football even know who he is at this point other than the guy with the wild hair.

Did they bring in Clausen before they drafted him, like they did with Newton. If I remember correctly, they didn't bring him in expecting him to go earlier than our first pick. We had overnight to do our due diligence before the second day of the draft. So when would Jerry have interviewed him in person before we picked him??

OK, selling Coca Cola and Nike products isn't enough.

He is the #1 selling jersey in the NFL. More than any pretty boy QB or even more than Peyton Manning selling cereal or whatever the hell he hocks. 10 of the top 12 selling jerseys are QB jerseys, Troy smokes them all. You can continue to be in denial of Palamalu's wide spread appeal in the US and around the world. But you'd be wrong.

I said he is not marketable outside of his hair and the NFL specific products. He does not have wide appeal outside of football, is not the face of his team and not many people know him outside of football unlike a Muhammed Ali, Michael Jordan, etc. And if they do it is because of his hair. And most of the world doesn't follow American football despite what the NFl wants you to believe. In most of the world football is what we call soccer and Polomalu is a nobody.

No one is denying he is well known in football circles but how many non football fans buy NFL jerseys. Secondly the Steelers have the most rabid fanbase who buy the most jerseys of any team which makes him the most popular steeler not the most well known sports figure in the country or the world as you would suggest. Try to keep up here.

They had months to prepare for the Newton pick and yes there were some not insignificant character concerns about him. Jerry knew that the pick was going to be someone who would be the face of the franchise and shape the direction of the team for years to come.

Jimmy was picked up on value, with the expectation that he could possibly be the franchise QB. There was no expectation that he would fall past the first 20 picks of the draft, let alone all the way to us midway through the second round. Obviously they did their research on him prior to and during the draft but that was the most amount of preparation we could afford to give to a player who was almost certain to have been drafted by the time we were on the clock.

Would you rather we have not sat Cam down with Jerry, or looked into him as much as we did before drafting him?

Unfairly? Yes and no.

Held to higher, and even more ridiculous standards?

Yes.

That's what comes with being the number 1 draft pick. Like others posted, the organization knew weeks and months in advance that Cam would very well be the pick. Clausen was picked up because he fell to us, and that he could develop into a franchise player. If the coaches and GM really wanted Jimmy that bad they would have traded up/drafted him much earlier.

Don't feel bad for a number 1 pick, just because he is held to higher standard than a 2nd round pickup. Do you feel bad for Ryan Leaf, or Jamarcus Russell? Because I sure don't.
