What does Cam have to do

Those are my expectations, I don't think they are too crazy

About 200 ypg, 1 td and 1 int a game, 60% comp and roughly 7 ypa

His college numbers destroyed that, makes it look like child's play.

Especially in this pass friendly offense

So, basically, better than Peyton Manning's rookie year.

Why am I not surprised?

Edit: Also better than Sam Bradford, Eli Manning, or Drew Brees, among others. While I think the numbers you suggest are possible, it's a tough standard as a baseline. So unless you think both Mannings, Bradford and Brees were all disappointments, you may want to rethink your numbers.

I also want to say that cumulative stats aren't going to be a big part of how I evaluate Cam this year.

Like TRD said it is how he gets there. If he has some rough numbers overall but has some games or moments that show that promise. Like Aikmen who had terrible numbers his rookie year but also had a game where he threw for @380 yards. Even though he stunk most of that season when you saw that game you thought "Okay this guy has something he just need to put it together"

Guys, MINIMUM I need Cam to have a year pretty much statistically equal to what Kyle Orton did last year, but what's most important is that Newton looks good doing it.

In all likelihood you will be disappointed.

20 tds and 9 ints would put him among the most successful rookie QBs in history if not the most successful

wow reading through this thing, a lot of you guys have no realistic expectations for cam this year. i have a feeling a lot of you are going to be super pissed at him when he doesn't come through with the stats you want.

seriously, just go into each game just hoping he looks better than the last. in the final 5 weeks or so, I would like to see him really come out strong, confident, and looking like a leader. basically, I'll take what josh freeman did for the bucs his rookie year. he got his lumps early, but came on strong towards the end of the year and gave the fans a lot of hope for the future and did not disappoint at all last year.

Bradford:

Att: 590

Comp: 354

Yds: 3,512

TD: 18

Int: 15

Rat: 76.5

YPA: 6.0

Comp %: 60

I expect Cam to be a little better in a better offense, better weapons, better pure passer coming out, better runner to keep defense off guard, etc.

 Cam better than Bradford? No wonder you will be disappointed this year.

20 Tds and 9 INTs is flat out comedy....it shows that some here love to type, but don't care to have a clue. It could be the most idiotic thing I've read here since comparing Cam to Big Ben.

I put Cam's chances for long term success at around 5%. For him to show me that he is on track to prove me wrong, he would need to show that he is developing into a competent pocket passer. No problem with running when you have to, but if he isn't developing from the pocket, he is a waste of time.

If we wise up and move him to a better position, like WR, then it's likely I will be happy with his development much sooner.

Then you are just as likely to be disappointed as the person that said 20 and 9.

And yes, disappointed is the correct word, as I think it would cause you physical pain to recognize him doing well.

Nah, I've been wrong before, and unlike most I have no problem admitting I am wrong again.

Odds are not in favor of that here, though. All evidence in the history of the NFL says that Cam Newton will not be a successful QB. Drinking the koolaid doesnt change the fact boys.

As for me being disappointed if he doesn't play WR....I dont expect him to. This pick was blown, there is no going back. No chance he ever plays WR, though if by some miracle he did, my opinion of this pick changes drastically.

I expect more INTs than TDs from him since he's a rookie dealing with a shortened offseason. But the context of the interceptions and TDs matters. If the team is down by 2 scores in the 4th, and it's 3rd and 15, then what the he'll, throw it into coverage, try to make something happen. Thats what drove me crazy about Jimmy last year. Anyway, if Cam shows decent consistency and has a couple of "wow" games, where he puts th offense on his back and carries them, I'll be happy.
