Smitty set to play vs Bengals

I hope we see the dynamic of having 3 threats to the defense on the field at the same time.

So much has been made of the defense having to account for Cam's running ability (which isn't scaring any defense...yet) it'll be nice to see how Smitty's presence will affect coverage schemes.

With Olsen, Smith, and Newton on the field at the same time, someone has to be open.

Should be fun to watch.

dont forget we'll also have on most of those plays shockey and either williams or goodson. all of those guys are good receivers and threats with the ball in their hands (shockey just because he'll knock you over). then we have the additional wildcards in edwards and naanee. dont' know how those guys are going to work out, but i like the potential.

this could be lethal.

Just scored two tickets to this game via a vendor at work. 50yd line 2nd row behind the Panthers! I actually live in this shitty town and will have to hear about 50 Bengal fans the next day if we lose. I'm hoping that our offense explodes...finally.

Eh, I don't think all hope is lost if we don't destroy the Bengals. After all, this is the 3rd preseason game, not the NFCCG, and what the teams did in their last preseason game really has no bearing on this next game.

These are glorified practices people, and this Panthers team is nowhere near a finished product. Hell, they won't be a finished product in week 6 of the regular season either.

I think part of the whole "Smitty didn't try and go up for that ball over the middle" discussion the past few years is based on the fact Smith does not like going across the middle and reaching up for balls. If you look at it, that is when he is most vulnerable and when he has taken his worse shots. When you have guys like Gregg Williams saying that the best way to slow Smith down is hit him every chance you get and most of the time safeties are patrolling the middle, there is a tendency as you get older to avoid that kind of unnecessary contact. The problem last year was Moore would sail passes high and Clausen has trouble getting them there. Honestly if I were Smitty I would prefer the ball low. That way either he catches it or no one does and he doesn't risk his ribs and other body parts to a hit when he is stretching for a ball and a safety comes over just to give him a shot for the hell of it. With all Smitty's mouth he does set himself to get hit gratuitously.

I agree.

Plus if you watch some of his drops.....I think Smith didn't trust Clausen not to lead him into trouble.

Jake would lob it up for Smitty often but Smitty was never really put in harms way often.

don't think smith trusted jake the year before, either. jake was telegraphing everything he was doing to the defense (of course moore did a good bit of that as well...tapping the ball right before he was going to throw every single time). jake just got more reckless than usual because he was more frustrated than usual. that got smith into some not so good situations.

true, I guess I was more thinking about Delhomme in general. I try to forget about 09 as he shouldn't be remembered that way.

well, i had been wanting us to work towards replacing him since '07 and esp. after that '08 playoff fiasco. of course i was wanting the whole coaching staff gone at that point anyway. i started wanting fox fired in '07. kind of a package deal.

Are Otah and Gamble playing?
i hope so, but i can't recall.

gamble is probably closer. looks like otah is having pretty close to the same issues as last year where they just can't figure out what is causing the problem. the big dude is frustrating.
