Smitty set to play vs Bengals

We had the money to get an upgrade in all of those positions, why aren't we spending it?

Why free up cap space if you aren't going to use it to get better? We could have started filling holes 2 years ago, but we didn't because JR wanted to protect his wallet, which is fine as long as people don't pretend he only had our interests at heart.

I don't see how anyone can point out JR had winning at the forefront of his mind with a lockout and a new coaching staff on the horizon.. I also don't see how anyone can pretend they would do anything different than JR with a lockout and a new coaching staff ahead..

JR doesn't coach up talent.. what he can control was the young guys getting starting experience in a down year.. otherwise, we spent money on Center, RB, MLB, DE, OLB, OLB, and if I missed one, so be it..

the only way we would have filled another hole was to drop DWill and sign a CB.. which I think was the best move.

however, I don't see how we could sign C, RB, MLB, DE, OLB, OLB, CB, RG, RT (possibly), #2 WR, DT, and as of now QB with "all this money we had saved"..

it's now time for our coaching staff to do their job and Hurney/Rivera/Scouting Department to draft talent..

side note: #2 was addressed via Greg Olsen.. matter of fact, he's most likely going to be our #1 target this year..

No reason to bring my wife into this conversation...just shows the type of person you are.

I'm glad we signed our core guys, but you want to improve, become a consistent winner, be feared.

The point of tanking a season and cutting payroll is to set yourself up to do some big things, we did nothing. We still have huge holes at CB, DT, RG, possibly RT, WR2, and as of now QB.

We got better at TE and conceptually with our coaches.

Not worth the poo JR put us through. We're no closer to winning our division than we were last year.

this team had 3 glaring weaknesses last year.

Coaching, QB play, DT play.....sure there are other weaknesses but those were the big 3.

They addressed all 3. They aren't overnight fixes but they still addressed the weaknesses going forward. Some to a great degree than others.....but I am not sure how you argue we got worse.

bengals just picked up taylor mays...just got intresting.

how? they picked up an overrated safety that no one but the bengals wanted. not sure what the big deal is there.

dude is big and had a good 40 time which was why he was drafted so early. he's got crappy coverage skills. bears thought about him for a little while, but they were more interested in having him play LB.

people make too much of a deal about this guy.

If we look like poo vs the Bengals then I'll be really worried.

If last week was a eye opener for the team, this week BETTER be a confidence booster, I don't think there is any recovering from a loss to the Bengals(even if it's the pre season).

couldn't fill all of them, but I wish we could have filled a couple of them.

Agree on both counts. Marty was known as being good with the cap, although I know we have someone else managing it now for him. In any case, we could have done more if the team wanted to.

I cannot understand why we didn't at least bring in one of the better corners in FA. That one is beyond me. It is also clear now that we need a number 2 receiver, but it may be too late to find quality.

Guess we will just have to see what cuts bring.

I wouldn't worry too much about #2 receiver. As others have pointed out, Chud's system never led to #2 receivers putting up big numbers no matter who they are. And when the regular season comes around I have to think we'll be running a lot more than e have been in August. Between Williams, Stewart, Smitty, Olsen, Shockey and whatever designed runs/options they have in for Cam, may not be many balls to go around to the other wideouts. I do think a starting caliber DT has to be added between now and opening day though.

I understand the point and agree to an extent, but can't help but think about where we will find ourselves if Smitty goes down for a few weeks with an injury.

Our WR stable without Smith is pretty pathetic.
