The Herd on Cam Newton today

doesn't sound like he said anything far fetched or over dramatic.. Cam has a long ways to go and I wouldn't be opposed to watch him on the bench at least the 1st half of the year..

if he starts, awesome.. I'm looking forward to Thursday's game..

Funny but all the rookies QBs took a step backward this week. And most of them did worst than Cam. Fumbling the balls, getting Sack, and interceptions were the invited guests at their games. I'm really starting to feel sorry for Andy Dalton.

But interestingly enough, not one of these writers are picking apart these QBs mistakes or harping on the things like they are with Cam. And they didn't do it with Sam Bradford either. It's clear Cam has to be perfect on all counts or he is a failure and it's a damn shame.The kid can't even be human and get a bit nervous...Even that is over analyzed. Heck, Clausen is more jittery now than he was when he was a rookie and none of those writers are harping about that.

None of the other rookie QBs were the first overall pick in the draft. I was not a Cam supporter but he is our pick so I will hope he does well to make the Panthers do well. But at this point Clausen has looked slightly better and we should go with who will help us win overall. If he sits a couple games until then so be it. If he proves he should start in the next two games then cheers for us.

Jimmy has been running the one's up to this point. This will be Newtons first week of exclusively running with the one's.

Chud's actually gameplanning and knows Newton strengths and weaknesses by now.

He's a rookie QB that has yet throw an NFL pick and has done a good job of staying in the pocket despite having DTs in his face.

Good job so far. The best is yet to come. Believe it!

Cowterd is a jerk.

it's preseason.

it was his first start.

it was his second game.

he's still very green

right side of the line was nothing but backups.

he didn't have steve smith.

he was facing a pretty good defense (finished top 10 in passing D and rushing D)

panthers didn't game plan.

sooo...yeah...his results aren't going to be all that great.

Funny how these excuses didn't work for jimmy last year...

people didn't hammer Jimmy's preseason performance. All in all, most people pimped his conservative check down style of play as smart and savy around here.......

you have to pick your battles wisely or else you'll bicker with people on unimportant & uninteresting debates rather than discussions worth a poo..

Jimmy wasn't the number 1 overall pick either ;) ...the higher the pick the higher the scrutiny.

correct Jimmy wasn't.

But Cam missed roughly 1500 reps thanks to the offseason per Rivera. And he is already on par w/ Clausen overall........who has 10 starts, 13 NFL games, and was a "polished" qb coming out of school.

so it just seems like most hot air for those trying to find ways to knock him through 2 preseason games where he hasn't turned the ball over and completed more first downs than Jimmy despite less drive attempts.

More first downs and zero points...when getting first downs wins games vs points on the board let me know.

To be honest, I find it hard to believe he has more first downs than Clausen...let me google that

Edit 1: I don't know about "drive" attempts but I can tell you that Cam has more passing attempts thus far to be considered the "running QB" seems kinda odd that he would have more passes with less drive attempts.

Anyway; passing attempts after 2 preseason games

Jimmy = 22

Cam = 33

Still looking into the other claim you made

Edit 2: Passer ratings for each after 2 games

Jimmy = 81

Cam = 65

Edit 3: First downs

Jimmy = 9

Cam = 7

Cam has had more plays during the first 2 preseason games

Edit 4: I did not count the TD pass to Olsen as a first down

Edit 5: Stopping after this because I think any rational person can see that the difference between the two isn't really that close...and it favors Jimmy

Passing yards per attempt:

Jimmy = 7.25

Cam = 5.9

Points scored

Jimmy = 17

Cam = 6

Yes Clausen was labeled as "polished", but if you think he wasn't put into a no win situation you gotta be blind.

Jimmy threw the pick. It happens, and its gonna happen to Cam. We can twist stats every way to say either guy looks better, but what I look at is leading the team to points, and Jimmy got Cam in that department.

With that said, I do hope Cam can solidify his job vs Cin. It would be great for the team, it's Cam's job to lose.

If by no win situation you mean drafted onto a team he didn't fit.......then yes, it was a no win situation.

Fox needed an option if Moore didn't pan out.....and was hot or cold. Games like the SF game Moore had showed you could win with decent QB. Hell, the NO game that Clausen played showed if you weren't god awful you could compete w/ this team......Clausen did nothing that game and was in position to win on the final drive.

All in all, Clausen played just like he did at ND. He didn't fit and that wasn't his fault nor was it Fox's fault. Both really got screwed.
