Hurricane Irene..

Everybody good?

Power out? Flooded?

Gimme the 411 on the ground, don't trust the media to be anything but hype.

Everything in my neck seems fine. Few random trees down, but nothing crazy.

A few pockets of power outages, but again nothing worth noting.

Yeah, nothin... haven't been to the beach, but no reports of anything bad. I'm sure there was erosion and sand loss...

No flooding, no major issues that I know of, just lots of leaves everywhere.

My back is sore from raking and weed eating yesterday, does that count for anything?

I'm all for taking things like this seriously but this one looked pretty weak all along. Unless you lived right on the beach or in a very low area there wasn't too much to worry about. I said I would post some pics but nobody wants to see leaves strewn about my yard... cause that's the extent of it.

The other thing that kills me is the media coverage... they're straining to find any little thing to report. Downed trees, people in the wind tripping, you name it... it's more than silly.

I wanna see some football tonight, if they pre-empt the game with more of this silly coverage I'll be pissed.

Yeah, it was no big deal.

North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue said the state suffered “millions and millions of dollars” in wind and flood damage from Hurricane Irene, which is also blamed for the deaths of six people.

“It’s a much more extensive hit than anyone thought,” Perdue told reporters in Trenton, a tobacco- and cotton-growing community that was her first visit today to areas hit hard by the storm. “People were distracted by the fact that the media began to say, ‘Well, it’s not much. It’s just a Category 1.’”

The sun was shining today in North Carolina, and state teams have begun assessing the damage, Perdue said. The governor said more than 500,000 homes and businesses are still without power, and she urged residents to be patient as tree-cutting and electrical crews start working.

“They are going to spend a lot of this day cutting trees to get down the roads where the power is out,” she said. “Hot lines, that’s the big scare right now.”

Perdue, 63, a first-term Democrat, and her staff arrived by two helicopters, which landed in the lawn of the Jones County Civic Center, which was littered by yellow insulation. Winds ripped off a section of the roof yesterday, forcing about 50 evacuees to relocate to an elementary school.

Insurer Losses

Hurricane Irene may cost insurers $200 million to $400 million in losses in North Carolina and South Carolina, with about 90 percent of the total from North Carolina, according to catastrophe risk-modeler Eqecat. The firm provided the information today in an e-mailed statement.

Hurricane Floyd is the most expensive storm in state history, with estimated losses of $1.4 billion in 1999 dollars, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

Irene slammed into North Carolina, making landfall near Cape Lookout about 7:30 a.m. eastern time yesterday with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour (140 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. The storm dumped as much as 14 inches (36 centimeters) of rain on eastern North Carolina and extreme southeastern Virginia, with the largest amount reported at Bunyan, North Carolina, according to an advisory from the center.

There was flooding in Pamlico, Craven, Hyde and Beaufort counties, said Ernie Seneca, a spokesman for the state’s Division of Emergency Management. Responders performed 76 water rescues in Beaufort County yesterday and overnight, Seneca said in a telephone interview today from Raleigh.

Roads and Bridges

More than 200 roads and 21 bridges were closed, including a section of Interstate 95 in Halifax County because of downed trees and Highway 12, the main artery in the Outer Banks, Seneca said. There is a major breach on Highway 12 about five miles north of Rodanthe in Dare County, and several other breaches have been reported on that highway, Perdue’s office said in an e-mail.

There were at least six storm-related fatalities in North Carolina, with four more in Virginia and one in Maryland, mostly from falling trees from the wind. A woman in Pitt County was found dead this morning inside her home that had been hit by a tree, said Sergeant Jorge Brewer of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in a telephone interview.

FWIW no one from that area has chimed in.

Media made out like it was a Major storm.

Not defending the media, but at one point it was a major storm and had potential to be worse. If there hadn't been some sense of urgency, and the storm was as strong as it had potential to be, then more lives could have been lost.

There's a balance needed ... and people also need to realize that the media does hype, and while they do, that doesn't mean there's no danger at all.

    • Super raw, not sure he is worth a top 10 pick.  Primary a pass rusher.  A bit like Burns, very fast athletic but doesnt always follow the play.  His highlights look good but when you watch him play you can see he is just raw and needs to develop
    • Personally, I am not sold on Bryce yet--and I do not think anyone is saying they are, but I don't think Ward is on table when we draft anyway.  Not even sure if I would rather have him than one of the later QBs.  I see a lot of potential in Allar, Nussmeire, Rourke, and even Hamilton from Ohio State--Milroe is intriguing, but I am not sure he is an NFL QB.  Ewers is that sleeper who falls and becomes a solid starter. I think that we sign a veteran who has played and we draft one of these project QBs. To your point:  With that in mind, I think you have to take QB off the table in round 1, and if Bryce can string 4-5 games like KC together, we still need to draft a QB in round three or so---I really think Rourke is a great fit for this offense--he is accurate and gets the ball out quickly---he impressed me vs OSU.   Reason?  I think we may have a tough decision to make about Bryce in 2 years--will he be worth $60m?  That decision is a lot easier if you have been grooming a backup for 2 years who can play. In round 1: I am hoping for PSU's edge Abdul Carter In round 2:  I would like to see us grab a DT who can rush the passer.  Walter Nolen of Ole Miss is versatile and a bit raw. I think he could be an excellent complement to Brown. In round 3:  I would love ILB Danny Stutsman from Oklahoma.  He is a beast. With 11 picks, I would package our 4th rounders to move up into the third round and take a QB.  At the moment, I think Rourke is trending upward and he has the skills Canales seems to want in a QB.  Quick processor, quick release. I would use the fifth rounders on OL.  I know that I left out WR--however, we are getting Thielen back, XL will be improved, Coker will be improved, and Moore has been surprisingly good.  Sanders (TE) has been more than expected in the passing game.  I think we need D more than WR, and maybe we can get a veteran WR to sign or find a hidden gem late.
    • Wouldn't be surprised if he starts a couple Jets games this year with the way the Rodgers thing is going. Giants fans are pissed they didn't keep him lol. He might actually have a little bit of a market.
