Newton starter vs Bengals, Week 1 starter TBD

The offense in general was ineffective against in Miami, and that made it difficult to evaluate the rookie QB. The point of naming a week 1 starter this week was for the preparation for Thursday's "dress" rehearsal, and they will still get to have that mock period in which they can prepare for thursday as if it were a regular season game.

I know it was, but what I'm saying is that Cam has failed to really prove himself at a level that would allow the coaches to name him the starter for Arizona this week like they had hoped. The same can be said of Clausen. That's just how it is - it's not meant to be some knock that Cam will never be ready or never prove himself, he just hasn't yet. He's a rookie, has huge upside, but isn't there yet. That's OK. He'll grow into it.

This is a good decision for Cam because it lets him prepare for the entire week and we can really get an idea of what he can do at this point in his career with a week of prep for an opponent.

Despite struggling last week at Miami, Newton will start and play about three quarters Thursday at Cincinnati. Rivera plans to treat this week as a mock game week, and wants to see how Newton handles it.

...

Coaches also want to see Newton improve his mechanics. The 6-5 right-hander completed 7 of 14 passes for 66 yards in the first half at Miami, but completed only one throw to a wideout and consistently misfired on longer passes.

But Rivera said he thought Newton made good decisions against the Dolphins.

“The next part is delivering the ball on time, hitting the receiver in stride,” he said.

we've got a backup mlb that would start for many teams... it sucks, but I think we will be ok until Beason makes it back... I just hope he doesn't rush it.

Beason makes up for about 50 percent of our LB corps, Connor decent against the run, but doesn't cover the field like Beason.

Can't wait to see how poorly the Bengals play tonight.

last week the bengals made the lions look like passing genisues, their QBs a combined 23/33 for 280 yards, 3 tds, 0 ints... and 8 of those incompletions were from 1 qb, lol. on the other hand the lions struggled on the ground, so who knows.

we're certainly weaker without him, but we have a decent backup option at least. of all our injuries/people sitting out, LB is one of our deepest positions right now.

Some of u are such Chicken Littles. U expect Cam to be ur savior but start freaking out as soon as he doesn't meet ur expectations...whatever they may be.

Here's a reality check...Cam will get sacked every now and then...been there already. He will throw a couple of bad throws..been there already without being intercepted, thank God...He will have days when u wonder if he will ever score...been there already. Oh look Cam is playing like a normal QB.

Now relax and stop biting ur fingers to a numb everytime someone find something wrong with Cam that is blown out of proportion.Sheesh

not sure who it is you think expected Cam to be the savior... as Rivera said, they weren't drafting him to save the organization. I expected him to be a rookie, which is actually what he is. Many of us just prefer not starting rookies, but hey, hopefully he can make the most of it.

you seem to have real issues with people being critical of Cam, and none of the posts in this thread have been unreasonable as far as I have seen. just relax.

None of that will really matter if the right side of our line does not learn how to block real soon. Blitzing LBs are bad enough when you have a good line and a young QB.

Well I thought Clausen has looked a little better so far but there's no denying Cam's upside is greater. It's Cam time...hope he comes around sooner rather than later.

Give it the week. A lot can change when Smitty is back, we're game planning for an opponent, Cam has an entire week with the 1s and that should help... at least, that's what i'm telling myself. I doubt optimism or pessimism on my part will influence this team at all, but I'm excited to see what Cam can do.

I know, I know. We've got lots of holes. But let's just see how they handle it after we actually gameplan for our weaknesses. the last two weeks we haven't been trying to cover much, just letting our guys play, getting an idea of who could do what. This Thursday we'll have a much better idea of what we can expect in the early part of this season.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
