Newton starter vs Bengals, Week 1 starter TBD

I'm routing for Cam, but I'm not gonna get too hyped up/depressed until we can see what he does this week. Everybody clammers on that week 3 is the most like a real game; so let's see if he can't do better with a gameplan actually tailored for him.

I know lots of people also rag on his mechanics and he does have work to do, but Rivera was talking about that today; saying he's seen a marked improvment from the first day of camp, to the point where he once again said "Wow".

actually this time last year people thought the bengals were pretty good. they won the AFCN in 2009 IIRC

now? they'll probably go 0-16, they don't have one decent player on that team anymore. not one

i hope luck goes there!

I don't mean in the preseason last year, I mean in the third game of the regular season. There were a few posts that were like "Look how well rookies do who start versus the Bengals!" and even the Cincy announcers I got to listen to were all "Oh god not a rookie, we're going to get destroyed!" (and they were serious).

Who ever starts preseason game 3 and gets those 3 quarters w/ the starters is pretty much the opening day starter pending that QB doesn't completely implode and the game is competitive.

Game 4 will most likely be treated like a typical game 4 and a chance for starters to rest and lick there preseason wounds for the most part. Only if Cam implodes Thur would Rivera likely continue the "QB battle" into the next game.

Is that it or? Is coaching staff giving Cam as may reps as possible to make up for all the missed practice/ota's etc. I think they are trying to get him experience. I'm still confused as cow on astroturf about Derrick Anderson: why is he on the team? He could be a coach and not take up a roster spot.

I'm still expecting around 4-12. I'll admit the first preseason game got my hopes a bit higher, but eh. We'll improve, that's all I can ask for.

True about Gettis, but Olsen more than makes up for that if we want to do some weird twisted playing weighting by expected contribution. I don't think you can debate the upgrade in the passing game from Shockey either, even if you put most of that emphasis on a coordinator that thinks they are more than just additional lineman. Also, I personally think AE's growth will have some effect this year, and while it won't counter the loss of Gettis, it'll be another plus. Overall we're still weak past Smitty at pure receivers, but overall our passing game looks much stronger than it did last season because of the addition of the tight ends and (hopefully) a better system.

Our running game may actually take a hit though - Chuds was often criticized in Cleveland for not running enough.

Olsen is the #2 passing threat and would have been w/ a healthy Gettis.

...I know, that's what I said, though I realize it may not have been clear. But the loss of Gettis basically means one of our better young playmakers is gone for the year and it does hurt... He was really showing some explosiveness last year when he got on the field. I was expecting some big things out of him this year as he grew with our young QBs.
