There are reasons that Lucas hasn't been released yet. First of all he is very popular with the players and a quiet force in the locker room. He more than anyone created a very tight squad last year and kept things from blowing up on Smith.

Second he still has skills and can play in a more aggressive scheme that hopefully Meeks brings in.

Finally even if we release him we only save 2.3 million of his 9 million dollar cap cost. So he counts 6.7 million even if we let him go. Plus we have to find a better player for 2.3 million or less. Otherwise it costs us more to release him and find someone else who may or may not be a upgrade.
