Can we stop with the knee jerk reactions? (and my observations to the game)

We have a subpar game and people freak the hell out. "We shouldn't be picking a starter," "tonight was the coaching," "waa waaa waaa."

Chill. Look, it is the preseason. It is a scrimmage. It means NOTHING other than seeing what your team can do in game situations. It is also a time to try things you haven't done. I was only able to watch almost the first half, but here is my thoughts after seeing that and looking at the stats after that point.

-Defense (front 7). Didn't look great. But why? Last week, we saw a good bit of blitzing. Last night, not a lot at all. Why is that? Well, one thought is that it is the preseason and they don't want to see how much they can stop a team as much as evaluate the DL and see what they can do on their own. The reason Miami was able to run the ball so well was because we weren't blitzing at all. When we did blitz a little in the 1st quarter, we held them to very minimal gains. Was pleased on the goal line stand (well, almost) in the 1st quarter. Took Miami 5 plays and a penalty to get in.

-Defense (secondary). Not great by any stretch, from what I saw. Receivers getting too much separation. Not what you want to see. Didn't really see enough of the game to evaluate this.

-Cam. First pass was good. The out-route to Shockey at the start of the 2nd drive was a great pass. Other than that, still looks like a rookie at times. The first run was exciting. It is so good to have that element in our QB play now. Receivers couldn't get open though. I will say that. Mostly due to no Steve Smith to draw attention. I give Cam's performance a little worse grade than last week. C+ to B-, at best.

-Run game. Turrible. Just turrible (from what I saw).

That is all I saw. I don't think coaching was the problem. I think it is simply doing different things because it is preseason. You have a plan of what you want accomplished from each player. You're not necessarily playing these games to win them (although it is always nice).

Flame away, I know it is coming.

Last night's D played zone about as well as the Madden AI.

Agreed. One thing I LOVED though was having Thomas Davis back. I saw at one point a disguised cover 2 (looked just like a cover three pre-snap). Davis took off at the snap of the ball to the flat, where he met Bush, who dropped the pass. But Davis got there in a hurry. Very cool to see. Very creative. Something we're not used to seeing around here, as far as how it was set up.

Our corners are just....:(

Seems to me smitty has trouble adjusting to the regular season after lounging through the preseasons. (Smitty always finds a way not to play preseasons). Look ahead? OK I go out two games. If we beat the steelers on home ground, I'll eat all my words. Coach Tomlin always plays to win.

yeah it wasn't a bad assessment of the team, especially the front 7.

And just to elaborate further, our DL got pushed around way too much. I mean, I know it is easy because you're out-numbered by the OL and FB. But you should at least be able to cause a pile every once in a while. Don't rely on the linebackers to make plays out of nothing. That being said, our LB didn't really get down hill as fast as they need to every play either. It all comes back to the DL and in particular our DTs. Need to be more consistent.

Deangelo only carried the ball three times in the first half. All of those were even in the first quarter. So I disagree that the run game looked terrible. If this was a regular season game there would have been much more balance in the offensive gameplan. The offensive line and everybody suffered from the constant pressure that was brought due to our lack of a rushing threat simply because we more interested in testing Cam than giving reps to Deangelo.

If what u observed is on point, then the coach now have a lot to work with and fix.
