I Will Say Again " DT "

Games in the NFL are won and lost in the trenches. I was very, very disappointed when we passed over some premium DT talent with our 1st pick this season considering we had nobody at the position on our roster.

Games in the this league are not won and lost in the trenches. The stats that correlate most strongly with winning are pass yards per attempt and opponents pass yards per attempt. QB is a much more important position than DT.

if the offensive line sucks, does that affect the ypa?

Yeah, but no single offensive or defensive lineman affects the ypa as much as the QB. If you think we should've drafted a DT because you don't think Newton's gonna be any good, fine. But the idea that we should've drafted a DT because that's the more important position for winning games "in the trenches" is ridiculous.

i could care less about cam newton.

the one thing i stand firm on about the qb position is you don't abandon your rookie after one season...no matter how good or bad he looks, and especially when there was no supporting cast around him.

if newton was drafted last season and clausen this one, i would be saying the same thing.

i also stand firm on the fact that the one single piece that the defense needs/has needed is a dominate dt. that one position is what's keeping this defense from it's full potential.

this team would stand a chance at a winning season if it had a stout defense to keep the opposing team from running up the score...in return, there would not be so much pressure on a rookie qb to bring his team from behind. a rookie QB should be nothing more than a game manager from the start if he is going to develop into someone who can carry a team.

yes, one player can make an immediate difference on his respective side of the ball...ask the buffalo bills starting defensive line.

it's to the point that their offense is behind because they can't get productive reps in practice.

better yet, watch him play. then image what this defense would be like with him in the trenches...

...and who would have made the bigger impact on this team now and in the future.

The difference is, I do think you abandon a QB after one year if he doesn't show anything. The Panthers had the worst starting QB in the NFL. The worst team at the most important position. I agree, rookie QB's make mistakes, they tend to be inconsistent, etc. But I'm not talking inconsistency, Clausen's best game wasn't good enough, he never showed even flashes of quality. Given that, an improvement at QB will make a much bigger impact than DT. Cam might be a bust, rookie QB's often are. Then again, rookie DT's are often busts too.

marcell dareus and bust will never be used in the same sentence.

he was plugged into the starting defensive lineup from day one and hasn't looked back.

i'm not going to say carolina made a mistake or newton won't become a good QB...i will say, winning and winning now is what creates excitement and sells tickets.
