Rivera should hit the brakes on picking QB

Honestly I wouldn't be shocked if it was Jimmy and I wouldn't really complain (until Jimmy pissed me off ) But if it were me I would still be leaning toward Cam at this point for the reasons I said above.

Eventually this will lead back to the unprovable argument (for both sides) of whether sitting actually is that beneficial to QBs. And I don't want to try to re-argue that topic.

All u can ask for is that he doesn't upchuck all over the field and give away any points.

That's all you can ask for the in the preseason, that's not enough in the regular season to actually win games with the team we have... He's played well for a rookie, but if you don't need to start a rookie, you don't.

I don't know why you think I would dig on Cam no matter what he did... if he played well, I'd give him props. Pretty sure I even said last week he made some pretty throws and was exciting to watch, but he wasn't perfect (not that I expected him to be).

True, though I've never heard anyone saying sitting hurt a QB, so if Jimmy is the better now... ;) but yeah I know, what helps the organization more in the long term etc.

New Reed article on this subject...

http://carolinagrowl.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=993:game-story-so-who-starts-at-qb-newton-failes-to-impress-in-first-preseason-start&catid=1:articles

When asked by a reporter if he thinks he’s done enough to earn the starting job, Newton replied, “No sir. (But) I’m not going to worry about who’s the starting quarterback and who’s not, I’m going to worry about myself getting better.

“I’m not pleased with it all. But tomorrow when the film is ready I’m going to look and watch it and see what I need to work on.”

Clausen said the starting job is not anything he and Newton discuss and not something he’s going to dwell on either.

“We’re both young quarterbacks and we’re both learning a new system,” Clausen said. “We’re trying to get the terminology down, the verbiage down and the reads down so we can go out and play fast.”

Good for both of them... there is plenty for both of them to learn from tonight.

Jimmy's ceiling is lower than Cam's, but it's not like he has hit it. I don't think they are as close as you and some others think, either. I think the offense is actually more complete when Jimmy is in because he has grasped a bit more of it, but I may be reading too much into cam struggling the last week or so in practice.

I also think, as I've said a couple times now, that we could reinforce some of Cam's footwork flaws by throwing him into action now. We really need to squash his problems if we can. I suppose maybe at this point game time versus practice might not change it, but I personally feel that he has a lot to learn from Shula and Chuds and sitting will only help him there.

But frankly, I'd rather the better quarterback right now play opening day... and to me that is Jimmy. If he's as bad as many around here think, he'll struggle, and Cam will replace him a few weeks in. But in that time, Cam will have had a ton of time to work on what his problems are, while splitting practice reps with the first team with jimmy (perhaps not equally, depends how things are going). Maybe Jimmy will even surprise some of us.

I understand your thinking.

Frankly the throws Jimmy does make down field are pretty good most of the time, and tonight he was without any true downfield threats other than AE. In very limited time last week he seemed unafraid to go deep, and I personally think that he is going deep more in the preseason this year than he did last year. But without seeing coaches tape or being at the game it's hard totell if he wasn't finding the open receivers or if they just weren't getting open. (I think it was the later, but I admit I don't know for sure)

I honestly wanted Cam to sit for a season but I don't really feel he's as bad as many of u are making his issue out to be and Clausen still hasn't proven himself to be any better. Yes, he may be a little more consistant but how does that help if he isn't doing much with it.

IMO, Clausen should be outshining the rookie who has been forced to learn a playbook without much assistance and has been learning on the fly. Cam has been put under way more pressure byt those in the media than Clausen. Clausen is just asked to show you folks that his playing last year wasn't his fault.

The question is, has Clausen done that?

The fact is this... Clausen has not convinced anyone that he is ahead of Newton. This thread would not exists if that were the case. So what some want is for a 2nd year QB that has not out shined a Rookie to take the field. That is just stupid if you ask me. Cam is going to stumble and fall but he will learn and should be allowed to under the helm.

To be honest I much rather have Anderson start then Clausen, because at least we know he can be a Pro bowl QB. The only thing we know about Clausen is that he can go 1-16 and not beat out a Rookie.

Yeah, if only Jimmy had started all 16 games....................

I think he has, yes.

Clausen has done decently with what he has been given, frankly. Remember, Newton has played more than Clausen has this preseason, so there is more of him to comment on. Still, I've overall been happy with both of their progress up until tonight. I was disappointed in both of them tonight, but not just them... the entire team seemed to lack the fire that really seemed to ignite them against the Giants. I think they both did OK considering the situation. I think Clausen outplayed Cam over the last two preseason games by a bit, and I personally believe a player can benefit greatly from sitting some games. That's why I advocate letting Clausen start the season, and see where we go from there.

but I also understand why people prefer Cam. There's a lot to like there, and a lot of fun to watch. The most disappointing thing about tonight wasn't either quarterback, it was the defenses that were so porous against the run game we barely got to see our quarterbacks.
