Rivera should hit the brakes on picking QB

Let's be real, this new batch of QBs were preceived by the so called Sports Gurus to be the weakest class. But with only really three weeks of training camp, for most of them to be keeping up with those who have at least a years worth of Pro experience under their belt, that is saying a lot. I guess the whole college football isn't like the NFL isn't 100% truthful.

IMO, Clausen is in the driver's seat. He has to show that he should stay there. He has a little more advantage than Cam due to his experience. Cam by all accounts wasn't the media's choosen QB and they seem to be going out of their way to prove he isn't worty of his pick by over analyzing and scrutinizing everything he does.

Both Clausen and Cam are on the same playing field as far as learning a new game play and working with new coachs. All Clausen had to do was go out and show Cam why he deserves to keep his job. All Cam had to do was show Clausen he can hang with the big boys without buckling.

Clausen has shown that he has consistancy with his accuracy but he really does lack confidence and revert back to what he's comfortable doing when the pressure hits. Cam has shown that he is still a work in progress but really does seem to bring a lot to the table and he doesn't seem afraid to step up to the challenges.

Which one do u guy are willing to go with?? Do u go with the kid who has shown consistancy with his throws but u wonder which person is going to show up to play when the pressure is on or do u go with the rookie, who is still a work in progress, but brings confidence and a lot to work with to the table?

For now, Cam is not a liability. I'm happy to see no turnovers from him "yet". I have watched him very closely the last 2 games. I don't see a person that is scared or doesnt know what he is doing.

For example, when the screen pass play broke down last night, Instead of trying to make something happen, he just threw it to the ground. Go decision. The man is the future of our franchise, not Jimmy Clausen. Thats reality. Just like Sam Bradford, you need to let him start and develop a offense around him that will SLOWLY progress him into the system.

What makes you think this is Cam at his worst?

i have a hard time believing cam will reach a lower point in his career than "competing with jimmy clausen" unless he gets straight up joe theismanned

Again, our week 1 starter is more about whether or not Cam is ready. If the coaching staff feels Cam is ready, he's our guy, if not, Clausen get's the nod. There's no QB competition going on, this is solely based on whether or not Cam is ready.

U know...ur logic makes so much sense. But the question is, what does "ready" mean to the coaches and head office?

Does "ready" means as long as Cam stays vertical and don't do anything real stupid during the preseason, or does "ready" means Cam has to play lights out the way our media unrealistically believes he should everytime he touches his ball.

What makes you think this is Cam at his worst?

While it is true that this might be the best Cam ever plays it would be a big change from just about every other human being that has ever played football.

99% of all players are their worst their rookie season.

You might be making the argument that he will never improve from where he is right now and of course that is always a possibility but that flies in the face of 99% of history in the NFL. Most players improve dramatically from year 1 to year 2.

At this point it really doesn't even matter who it is IMO... If that was any indication of how our season will be... We're in a bad way. Our D looked about as pooty as they come.

Here I was thinking that our D would carry us until our O gelled... Doesn't look so good right now.

Yeah, but keep in mind that we still had sixteen key players out, and coaches were probably still running fairly generic schemes. Don't give up the ship just yet.

AT this point it shouldn't be about which QB is better now, it's about what's best for the QB of the future.

The good new about Cam is that every poor pass he's had has been 100% poo footwork, either throwing off his back foot or not stepping into throws.

You learn footwork through drills and practice, it's also one of those issues that can be made MUCH worse by putting them into games before they're fixed. There's a greater chance it gets worse in gametime situations, so why insert him before it's fixed?

The best thing for Cam is to sit a few weeks until his footwork improves. Once it does, his accuracy issues should all but disappear and he will be INCREDIBLE.

Patience guys.

I'd likely go more than just 'a few weeks' with that approach.

Starting a guy before he's ready just about always results in bad habits that are a bear to coach out of him. Clausen is an example of that.

But starting Clausen has it's own pitfalls. He's already taken a mental and physical beating. If you want a realistic shot at redeeming him, throwing him in too early isn't the best idea.

Regardless of who starts, the O-Line issues have absolutely got to be fixed. Otherwise we run the risk of the David Carr effect.

Based on what I saw last night, I think I would give Anderson some playing time with the 1s. Neither Newton or Clausen did enough to convince me either should start right now. Lets see what he can do.

Not gonna happen, per Rivera last night.

Nor should it,in my eyes. You do that and you waste valuable reps with our young guns.

Developing a QB takes time...
