Practice Observations

Mr. Scot

Who would that be? Gun to my head I say Derek Anderson, but I don't believe that'll happen. You could make valid arguments for each guy though (and that could be good, or bad) :sosp:

I'd pull the trigger if you replied with 'Derek Anderson'.

great read as always. love the insight. i wish you posted more in here. hopefuly while the season is going on you'll do it more...esp. if they are winning and you are feeling better which i hope is the case.

In the later scrimmages when the team moved to the close field (much to fans delight) the defense was throwing everything it had at the offense. The result was a few sacks and a lot of near misses that might have been sacks under game conditions. Won’t lie. The offensive line concerns me right now. Hope they look better come the season opener than they have lately. On the good side, they'll be well-prepared to face an aggressive defense.
this is the thing that has tuck out to me a lot. facing this blitz happy and aggressive defense is really going to help this offense be more prepared for hose kinds of defenses than they ever were under fox. that really bothered me, esp. last year, how unprepared the Oline was for the blitzes that were coming at them constantly last year. in practice the defense did nothing to try and replicate what the oline was facing.

Awesome. Mr. Scot, we all have our opinions and I know you're of the "old guard" who like to develop a QB from the bench first, but from what you saw of Newton would you say he can handle the job Week 1-long term?

My gut response? Yes, I think he could handle it. I'd just rather he didn't have to.

Thanks for the report Mr. Scot. I'm excited about the new zone blitz scheme we have. Care to highlight any more details about the blitzes you saw? Any guys they seem to be sending often?

Any of the top linebackers. Thomas Davis and James Anderson could see a lot of action there. Also Omar Gaither since he has some experience. Once Beason is back in there, him too. Part of the effectiveness of the scheme is that it can come from just about anywhere.

One sour note: Beason seemed kind of bummed about his injury status after practice. May just be because he won't play tonight. Hope it's not more than that.

one thing that may bring an added urgency to getting your rookie to start might be the shortened contract. were it for 6-7 years as it was under the old CBA, then i could understand more the waiting a year, but with the contract only being 4 years now...you are looking at 2-3 years worth of starting time before the contract runs out if you are being cautious. you can't pull an aaron rodgers anymore. you just don't have the luxury of time to let the QB sit on the bench for a year or two and let him get acclimated that way. it helps that the contracts are for a lot less money, but still that limited contract life has got to make an impact on the decision. not sending them out before they are ready, but working harder to get them close to ready earlier.

i've always been under the idea that the earlier, the better anyway as i think they learn better (or at least quicker) under fire and extra coaching between games. less theory and more putting it into practice. just a different mindset than yours in that regard.

still, i've also said that if one of the QBs is significantly better than newton, then that QB should probably get the start. i don't see that being the case. since newton appears to be at least on the same level as the other QBs and the players are responding to him, he is responding to coaching, and he has a good grasp of the playbook then we should be alright with him starting and he should do well with the responsibility.

I went to rate this thread, it says I already did. I hope I didn't screw up the rating accidentally while reading on my phone.

If so, I'm so ashamed. :(

Greatly appreciate the insight and time in putting this together for everyone.

the rating system is flawed. only one person can do it for each thread. after that it tells everyone else that they've already rated it.

Ok good. I was about to put myself in the Perma-Ban bet, by taking Jimmy Clausen's passer rating.

It says that I have already rated this thread too, no worries.

    • Start with Bryce, this is like his rookie year. The 1st 2 games proved her was wired wrong and it looks like (we hope) he needed a time out to reset and be the player that was drafted. He's still about a year or more away from being a top 15 QB, if the Panther give him another playmaker or 2 (a top WR and a decent TE) and maintain that line. Canales deserves credit as playing that card correctly to motivate (or refocus) his QB for one last shot to decide his and the Panthers immediate future. As a Panther fans we should hope he keeps improving as we invested so much to get him. CJ Stroud will never have a season like he had, even if he stays a top 10 QB. He's got great character so I'm rooting for Bryce to continue on his positive journey. Canales is playing the week to week thing with bryce perfectly. Nothings guaranteed, earn it weekly which builds consistency and consistency is greatness.  Keep the O-line. They've got to extend Brady C, along with Mayes that have a real good 7. Great job Morgan starting with the big guys upfront.  I really hope they draft a DE or OLB in the 1st round. Getting Brown back with A Robinson and what DJ has shown that we can have a decent D-line. Need a CB in the early rounds/ or a time FA to go with Horn.  The future as to next year being good enough to challenge for the division is within reach. Just show progress (win or lose) every week. Kudos to Dan Morgan. Plays GM like a LB. Tackle the problem and move on, don't just hope it works out. Find guys with your playing mentality and work closely with your HC to share a vision. Teamwork starts at the top and flows down.
    • Since we play the Panthers today and tmrw, we will have one gigantic double thread for both games. Today’s game is at 3pm and tmrw is 7pm.    After beating the Rangers and sending the those yankee bastards back to Cary, we get the Champs in the house.  Clean up the defense, no more lazy clears, and score baby score.  LFG CANES!
