What does Cam starting mean? Who will start day 1? TELL ME WHAT TO THINK SD89!!!!!

You are so way off base on your evaluation.

Your logic that the whole competition in camp is just a ploy to "not destroy JC's confidence" is beyond humorous....it is ridiculous.

Orly?

You really don't follow draft trends, do you? Please tell me how many #1 overall draft picks have sat on the bench the year they were drafted?

It's a pretty short list. Why?

Because the team who does the worst gets the best pick. And usually they need the most help right away at the position of that #1 pick.

Since we had the worst QB play in our franchise history (minimum 4 starts) from Clausen last year, the plan all along has been to replace him with another starter. Hurney said it right off the bat when Luck was still debating going pro.

The sooner you come to realize this, and accept it, the easier it will be to cheer for our new QB.

I know you want Cam to start. Thus, you skew every scenario to that decision.

Orly?

I've said before I don't care who starts. I don't care if Clausen starts against Arizona. I don't care of Clausen starts the first 4 games honestly (by then we'd see his ineptitude enough to know he's not starter material).

But it isn't going to happen.

Again... you don't pick up a QB #1 overall and sit him for any length of time. This is not how Pro Football works dude. It has nothing to do with my likes or dislikes.

I guess maybe you're an optimist in thinking that Clausen can be a starter? Or maybe you're a hater of the idea that Newton could be our starter? Or maybe a blend of both?

Why you keep trying to put this on me, like I'm championing Cam starting is baffling. I really don't care. Newton is a Panther. One way or another, he'll get his chance to start. He's too gifted to be a bench warmer.

Missing my point.

I am not debating whether Cam will start or not....or even should start or not. Just that starting him because of the reasons you gave would be foolish (in my opinion.....which according to my wife is worth absolutely nothing).

Start him if he is ready. Don't start him because you feel picking him #1 obligates you.

There is NOTHING wrong with letting a young and relatively inexperienced QB develop a little before throwing him to the wolves.

Again, I am not debating what they should do....just "why" they should do it.

Cam will only start if he's ready. Rivera wasn't lying to us, or the players, when he said it was a competition.

Also, Bradford would have sat last year but an injury to their veteran a bit late into camp got him action so they decided to run with it...

Ah... but your argument lacks data.

Rivera knows how Jimmy will play in a regular season NFL game. He spent most of the year as our starter last year and stunk it up.

What Rivera doesn't know is how Cam will play in a regular season NFL game yet. The only way to get that data is to give him reps with the starters and against starting defenses. Unfortunately, Preseason data is slightly flawed, because a handful of Super Star defenders aren't playing cause of health concerns, or because they or their coaches feel they don't need reps in preseason.

The only real 100% accurate data that can be gathered is to actually start him in a real game.

So in essense, you and me, and anyone else on this board, have no idea if Newton is "ready to start". Rivera probably has a sense about it, but doesn't know either. Its a calculated risk he will have to take. But the odds are, based on what he and Hurney said in the off-season, Cam will get the go ahead.

that "real data" from last year is also colored by... a great deal. you may think Rivera was lying when he talked about the situation not being good for Clausen, but I think both he and Hurney believe that Clausen can be a decent player - but obviously not as good as Cam could be or they wouldn't have drafted him.

Oh... I completely agree about Clausen's situation. It was terrible.

But even in the face of supreme adversity, a talented player is going to show flashes of good play.

Jimmy... well... he didn't show anything but a couple decent drives in the game he won. And even then his play was medicore.

I just don't think he has what it takes, even given the best coaching scenario. Add to that, he's been tainted by 33 sacks, and bad development... he'll be lucky to have a long career as a backup.

I think that newton will start the season. Why? Nothing based on skills or ability really. I think that the players trust Newton more than Clausen. Guys like Smitty dislike Clausen and that hasn't likely changed. Fans want Newton and will support him where they have already turned on Clausen and show it anytime he makes any mistake. Who will the team and fans tolerate losing double digit games this year, Clausen or Newton. That is all there is, really.
