Servers at high end restaurants do not claim 15% of their sales as tips for tax purposes for this very reason.

I am a very good tipper, and have had many waiters/waitresses actually catch me in the parking lot to thank me for the overly generous tip. I typically give over double what the avg person gives.

I tip the pizza delivery guy at least $10. He has gas costs and is usually working crappy hours.

I give no less than $5 for a lunch tip....usually about 50%.

My comment is more on the very expensive meals. How can anyone say that a waiter who worked for 2 hours on a $5k dinner should be tipped $1k. That is $500 an hour....or the equivalent of someone who makes $1 million salary per year. (Avg 2000 hours per year).

The amount paid should be comensurate with the service and work given....not JUST the amount of the bill.

Some old friends that worked fine dining say otherwise.

I tip 20% most of the time regardless of the type of restaurant I'm at. Ruth's Chris on new years eve and Melting Pot for my anniversary were like $40 tips, but I knew that I was going to spend that when I was walking in the door.

I don't consider Ruth Cris or Melting Pot high-end.....at least not in the context of whether servers are required to claim a % of sales as tips.

I am not talking about $40 tips....those are absolutely within reason.

I am talking about $500-$1000 tips.

Performed the same service and amount of work as your $40 tip....but made 10-25X more. Not logical.

No wait staff is worth $250-$500 per hour.

IIRC Burns Steak House in Tampa (yes it's a highend place) charges a flat gratuity for the servers and then you can tip on top of that if you like. I believe it's something like 10 or 12%.

Wow....have never seen a restaurant add a flat tip to the bill that was not related to a party over 6 people.

Well if you are ever in Tampa I suggest going. They train for over a year before they take the floor to serve you....

Great steaks, seafood, and one of the largest wine cellars in the country (they say world)

I just checked out the menu on their website. Looks outstanding.

About the same price as Del Frisco's here in Charlotte....not cheap but not too ridiculous.

Menu was diverse and looked delicious.

May have to try it. I get down to that area a couple times a year.

Definitely not a place I would take the kids.
