Deangelo did not look back late.

I don't know why people need to blame Deangelo to make excuses for Jimmy here, but give it a rest. Here is a diagram of Clausen's pick 6.

Green is Deangelo's route. Red is the designed throw to this receiver (though not exact, it could be any time after the cut). Pink is Jimmy's drop back, and I think you know why that's pink.

The designed play is for Deangelo to hit his cut, and immediately start looking for the pass. That's what he does.

But here is what happened.

White is the actual path of Jimmy's throw. Notice that while Deangelo is still a yard away from his cut, Jimmy is already in his forward throwing motion, and the ball is about to leave his hand.

Here, Deangelo, has just completed his cut, and at the proper time, he is immediately looking back for the ball. But guess what, it's already almost there, and it's well behind him, because it was thrown to where he was before he had ever made the designed cut.

Once he's through the momentum of his cut and continuing the route, the ball is there. Could he have stopped and turned around and ran back for the ball to swat it down before Boley got to it? It's possible, but highly unlikely when you consider he had about .05 seconds to react.

In short, blame the pressure, but Deangelo really ran a correct route on this play.

Not really defending jimmy here .. but drawn up usually isn't the running back supposed to go through the hole the defensive end is supposed to leave and then cut toward the sideline .. in other words go straight then cut as opposed to diagonal then cut.. because if so .. that throw would have hit him in the numbers.

You went through all that trouble just to say Jimmy Clausen made a bad throw. Seriously?

Sorry. I forget that this is the Huddle and we don't talk about football here. Here is a silly picture more in tune with the spirit of the forum.

tl:dr

really its all gross' fault for getting owned by PP. Time for our all-pro to step it up.

I like the dissection of this play. We can see in the second photo that Jimmy is in throwing motion and JPP has a grasp on him already. Shockey appears wide open as well but there I'm sure those to defenders coming from Jimmys right played a part in that or he just never looked for him or his mind was already made up. Gross did get owned by JPP that game, our vets have to play their A games or our young players may struggle.

You are assuming the Williams was running the correct route and Jimmy made the incorrect throw. Yes, they were on different pages. But, we don't know which page was the correct one. That's why we're glad it happened during preseason, so they can get it fixed.

You're right. If it was supposed to be a hitch route, it would've been the right throw.

But that's a big if.

On the play regarding the pick 6, it looks like the play was designed to go to Williams or Shockey to offset the blitz. As Bernadeau just got trucked, Shockey's side wasn't an option since there was immediate pressure up the middle-right on Shockey's side. It is possible that Williams was supposed to buttonhook, but it is unlikley given the layout of defensive pressure coming from the LB. Hence, what likely happened was that Clausen couldn't get the throw across his body as Pierre-Thomas had bull-rushed Gross into the left side of Clausen's face. It was a bad situation where stepping into the pocket wasn't an option, nor any means of scrambling was available to alleviate the pressure that was all over Clausen. He took a chance and was burned for it. The nice thing is that he responded beautifully in the face of a crowd looking for any reason to jutify their hostility at a 2nd year QB that was clearly thrown to the wolves last season. I like the mental toughness of this kid, and I think when Cam becomes the eventual starter for this team, it will be handed on a silver platter. Moreover, the trade value for this kid will be outstanding given the desert of viable QB options in the league right now.

Too Long; Didn't Read

Literally translates to: That was too long to read.

Really translates to: I'm too lazy to read the entirety of what you said, but I still want to say something.

DWill ran a really lazy route. He didn't drive upfield hard enough to push off the defender. He telegraphed the route, made a lazy rounded off cut rather than a crisp quick cut outside. He also slowed down after cutting outside rather than pushing hard to the outside away from the defender. All of these things make it a lot easier for defenders to read and undercut these routes and pick off a pass.

Just making an observation on DWill, not trying to take any blame away from Clausen, who should have seen this and thrown it away or more to the outside where only DWill had a chance at it.
