Shockey's camp comments on the U scandal

It's the worst kept secret in sports- everyone knows.

Totally agree... A friend of mine in high school was a top prospect basketball player, pretty much guaranteed to be drafted to the NBA (and he currently is, and is now starting in the NBA), and though his family was very poor, and obviously very poor, one day he arrives to HIGH school in a S500 Mercedes Benz... It happens...

LOL

Nope, I just graduated in '04. Most of my debt was covered by academic scholarships. I graduated with just under $20k in debt from a $34k/year school.

You talking about what a big deal $40k is only further proves your cluelessness and inability to see the bigger picture. In the bigger picture, $40k is absolutely laughable. A significant chunk of those big booster checks are written due to athletics. Boosters don't want to support crappy athletics. How much money do you think Cam Newton brought Auburn? The Golden Calf of Bristol to Florida? Bush and Leinart to USC? Bradford and Peterson to OU? Vince Young to Texas? $40k... LOL

Cam Newton didn't bring that much money to Auburn. Going to the BCS game didn't get Auburn much more money, since the payout from the BCS is split evenly among the conference teams. Odds are that two SEC teams would have made it to the BCS (conference champ and one other), so basically if Auburn went 0-11 last year, they would have made about the same amount of money. And most of the Auburn games are sold out prior to the start of the season, so he didn't increase ticket sales for them. Maybe Cam caused them to sell more tshirts but thats about it. Well that and probably more contributions from boosters, but only for a year or so. The booster money pales in comparison to the money that they get from the BCS and tv contracts, and those remain consistent.

Saying that the scholarship money is laughable is ridiculous. IMO, people tend to greatly overinflate the value of an individual in college sports. Thats why college sports is flourishing today even though many of these kids are leaving early. Its the team that matters, not the individual.

the NCAA is just as corrupt and therefore not physically able to clean all this up.

Case in point is NCAA committee infractions Chairman, Paul Dee. Paul Dee has no business working for the NCAA. From Wiki:

Under Dee's watch, the University of Miami athletic program was sanctioned by the NCAA in 1995. Eighty students, 57 of whom were football players, falsified their Pell Grant applications, illegally securing more than $220,000 in federal grant money. Federal officials described the scam as "perhaps the largest centralized fraud ... ever committed in the history of the Pell Grant program."[1][2] Moreover, the University provided over $400,000 worth of other, improper payments to Miami football players. The NCAA also ruled that the University failed to wholly implement its drug-testing program, and permitted three football student-athletes to compete without being subject to the required disciplinary measures specified in the policy.[3]

A coach during this tenure, Butch Davis, has recently been fired for infractions at UNC. Paul Dee was not happy with Butch when he bailed on the program he nursed back from sanctions and took NFL money. With Paul Dee's new position with NCAA he could finally do something about it.

The entire system is fvcked and there is only a matter of time before all of these panels and think tanks come up with a way to tear it down the rest of the way by paying players or making them wear ankle bracelets or something

Uhhhh....I pay my tuition, books, and more every single semester. The purpose of college is to get an education and the only reason football programs were allowed to begin with was to raise money for education. I don't give a poo that the guys get food, booze, or anything else small like that because they play football. But when guys get thousands of dollars and brand new cars that pisses me off.

This year I'm in a BCS school, but last year I was in a smaller college that had a 3rd tier level basketball program. It pissed me off to no end that I was going into debt from overpriced tuition and books while the university went overseas and gave basketball players free ride scholarships to come play for our pooty school. 90% of the students didn't even give a poo about the basketball program so it made most of us happy when they lost in the title game.

It's unfair that the I have to pay for me and other peoples education while they get free swag and an education just for being a D level basketball player. But maybe my opinion will change with a different school in a big conference.

Find something you can do that thousands upon thousands of people will pay money to see every Saturday and you wont be a broke college student any more you will be a rich college drop out.

It happens everywhere, but what these rich boosters don't realize (maybe they do) is that they are basically teaching those young students that they won't ever have to work for anything in real life and that they should be entitled to something for everything they do.

The question I want to know is, why does it seem as if the minorities are the ones being targeted by the NCAA. Please don't tell me rich kids don't take money from agents. Please don't tell me their parents, who can afford to send them to the best schools, don't take the scholarship money and use it on a kid who isn't going to go any further than the minor leagues.

Unfurtunately, the NCAA seems to be a refelction of our society.

FYI, colleges are businesses. some are non-profit organizations but some are clearly out to make money off their students. They are in the business of generating money through education.

Do u really believe that they are willing to go out and get the top high school athlete to educate him and not use him to generate money for the school?
