Surprise cut Jeremy Shockey

I was talking about this with a friend yesterday.

Barnidge is a good pass catching TE. Do you keep Shockey (injury prone and only going to be here for 1 season) and let a young talented guy walk.

I would cut Shockey if it came down to him or Barnidge.

So some people think we will trade clausen, cut a guy we traded a 1st round pick for, and cut shockey bc its normal to give a guy a $1 million to spend camp with the team. Smartest fanbase ever.:smilielol5:

We did not trade a 1st round pick for Clausen.

Damn some of our fans have absolutely no knowledge of this team....or how to look ANYTHING up on the internet.

Suprise cuts:

Ben Hartsock, With the way Barnidge has stepped up, why do we need him? Barnidge is offers way more than Hartsock. Barnidge can play well on special teams and can catch the ball and make big plays as we seen in his rookie season, he also cost a lot less. Hartsock is strickly a blocking TE and brings nothing else to the table besides experience.

Tyrell Sutton- The guy hasn't seen that much playing time and it seens the coaching staff likes Vaughn over Sutton. I really like Sutton but with the stable of running backs we have I see no need to keep 4 good running backs. I can see Sutton being successful elsewhere.

Nick Hayden- the kid should finally be cut this season. I have never thought he had what it takes to be a NFL player but somehow he always makes the team.

Players to make the team:

Gary Barnidge: The kid was on the outside looking in by being buried in the depth chart but he has really played well on special teams and has shown he can be a threat in the passing game. Offers more than Hartsock and has way more potential. The guy has really earned a spot on the team.

Kendric Burney- Kid was projected to be a steal in the draft, ended up being a undrafted free agent. The guy has played very well in preseason. The guy looks like he could end up competing for the #2 spot. Looks like another great UNC prospect. With lack of talent at cornerback Burney will see plenty of time this year.

RJ Stanford and Robert McClain- Both have shown they want to make the team with great effort in their first game of the year. Both guys should end up fighting for the #3and #4 CB spot.

Thomas Williams- The kid has looked great and should make the team even if its just as a special teamer. The kid has speed and can make big plays. Should be a top back up.

Jason Williams- I thought the kid played well last year and should make the team as long as he can stay healthy

Jordan Senn and Sean Ware- Both have shown they could end up making plays as rotational guys in this new defense. Even though they will mostly be playing special teams don't be surprised to see them coming in as subs more often this year.

David Clowney- can play special teams but has played well enough to be the last reciever on the team.

Andre Neblett- I can see him making the team as the last DT on the depth chart.

Surprise cut: Derek Anderson

2nd That. The coaching staff has made a lot of good moves, but still don't fully understand signing DA. He's at a weird spot in his career to be here. You can tell the guy still thinks he could be a potential starting QB, which has no shot of here.

The 2 times I've been at practice he just seems so unengaged. I don't see what goes on behind closed doors obviously, but I have a hard time thinking he is a good mentor.

He gets next to no snaps here, but he isn't exactly in that player/coach role that the 3rd QB here needs to be. Hard to figure out where he fits on team.

Respectfully disagree. Panthers are still going to run the ball a lot, and Hartsock is every bit as good a blocker (if not better) than King. He definitely fits what they want to do here. I think the Panthers are still going to run a lot of power-set with a blocking TE and a FB lined up in the I-formation.

Now hopefully the design will account for Cam to run some, but we need to stay strong where we've been strong.

The further into training camp we get also, the less I think keeping Hartsock means Barnidge is gone. Think Gettis injury opens the door for him to make the roster as much as any other WR b/c of Barnidge's contributions on ST and the fact he can be a weapon in the passing game.

I agree. I can see us keeping 4 TEs as well but if we don't keep but three tight ends why keep Hartsock? Hartsock is one dimensional and has no potential. Barnidge can catch, play special teams and probably can block decently. He is always one of the first guys to get to the ball carrier on punt returns and kick offs which is great considering his size. Barnidge has too much potential to be cut for a blocking tight end.

I don't however see Gettis Injury opening up the door for another TE, we will have to have a WR to replace his spot. The question to me is are we planning on keeping 5 or 6 WR. We already know Smith, LaFell, Edwards, Pilares, and Naanee look to be a lock at WR leaving Clowney, Martin, Adams and Wright battling for the #6 WR spot. I honestly think it comes down to Clowney and Martin for the #6 spot, Clowney to me is the best candidate but the coaches may think different.

I think we will only have one FB on the roster with Rashawn Jackson being kept on the practice squad. We used Fiammetta a lot in the preseason and hardly even gave Jackson playing time which makes me think that Jackson doesn't have a good chance of making the 53 man roster. Instead of having 2 FB I believe we will use 4 TE instead. Also could Hartsock play some full back if needed? I know I have seen some TEs that can play FB.

I also agree with you that our offense should be designed for Cam to run, I was really surprised to not see him run at all. I did like to see how we used some roll out plays( I think that's what they are called) where Cam ran behind the line of scrimmage and dumped a short pass to the tight end or running back. Cam not running on every play is a good think because it shows his maturity as a quarterback.
