Cap Impact of Traded players

Man Strength

Recommended Posts

How does trading a player, instead of outright cutting them, affect the team's salary cap?

For example, if we cut Lucas, we only get a few million in cap relief. If we trade him, do we then get to write off the whole thing or still only a portion?

Question 1.12

What happens if a player is traded or retires?

Answer: We already know that if a player is waived on or before June 1, the remaining signing bonus that has not been included in salary “accelerates” and is included in that year’s team salary. Acceleration also occurs when a player is traded or waived and picked up by another team. The new team is not responsible for any of the original signing bonus. The team that waived or traded the player is responsible for the accelerated signing bonus (in the same manner as described above).

In most cases, if a player retires, the remaining signing bonus that has not been included in salary “accelerates” and is included in that year’s team salary. Thus, the team will take an immediate salary cap hit of the remaining signing bonus.

how is Lucas' contract structured? especially in terms of bonuses and guarantees?

Trading or releasing him is essentially the same for us minus any draft picks we get for trading him. We will save around 2.3 million of his current 9 million dollar cap hit, I believe I read somewhere. So in other words if we keep him it costs up 9 million. If we trade or release him he will still count 6.7 million against the cap give or take a couple of hundred thousand. But he won't cost another 9 million next year which he is expected to do if we keep him through his contract.

    • Bryce has to show significant improvement, even if we don't win. I don't understand not bringing in competition at the QB position. Dalton is not the answer if Bryce gets injured. We should always be trying to improve the QB room. There are multiple examples of backups that ended up being better than the starter following an injury. I don't think that this team is going to magically turn around with one of the worst defenses in the NFL returning, but with new faces.  The things I need to see. 1. Quick progressions and decisions for getting rid of the ball, whether that's to a receiver or sidelines.  2. Multiple long sustained drives every game 3. Confidence. We need that swag back. He was showing it at the end of the season. We need a full season of that. 4. Less fumbles. He can't cough it up when someone gets to him.  5. IT. Some QBs have it, some don't. You know it when you see it.  6. More game winning drives where BY is the one leading it and doing it. I don't consider handing the ball off 3 times and kicking a FG a game winning drive for Bryce. I need to see him put the team on his back like Cam used to do.  If we don't see several of those things, I think we have to consider moving on. Can't offer BY starter money and a huge chunk of the cap if he's JAG.
    • Rod is such a terrible playoff coach. That guy is single handedly going to cost us another game.
    • It was encouraging that Bryce was benched last year when he was not getting it done. This gave me hope that Canales and Morgan have the stones to do the right thing about him going forward. If he does not progress this season the Panthers should look to draft a new QB in the 2026 draft. I really hope BY is the answer. He has no excuses this year.
