Rabies

They have to put them down if they show signs of rabies. My mom's vet told her the only way to tell is to cut their head off. WTF? My son said my mom was crying the entire time. Plus, she had to pay $100 for the necropsy. I TOLD her to take the cat to our vet, but she didn't want to drive that far.

The symptoms my mom's cat showed were paralysis in the back legs, swollen stomach, and growling at everything/everyone. There may have been more but she might not have noticed.

We should know something today or tomorrow if the test was positive.

I'll be glad when these two toms get their nuggets cut tomorrow. They are constantly tying into it. One even sprayed me to mark me. I guess it's nice to be loved but, Ewwwwwww.

I'm scared to death to turn them outside, where they usually stay except to eat. Chris said they've tangled with the cat my mom had to put down. Not a real fight, but hissing and posturing to run him off.

That is terrible! So sorry for the cat and for your Mom. Also sounds like there is more to come. Pretty dangerous situation.

It's going to be a mess if that cat's positive.

If anyone wants a kitten, or knows someone that wants a kitten, we have 4 ready to go. They're healthy, but need shots and they aren't old enough for neutering/spaying. One calico, one dark gray tabby, and two light gray tabbies with white feet.

No news, yet. The vet is now saying it'll be next week before they know for sure. I don't know if it's because State is backed up, or if the tests take that long.

My mom is in denial. Keep in mind she's in her 70's. She thinks she's going to be arrested if the cat had rabies. *sigh*

If I'm not mistaken , the only 100 % way to make sure or not if it's rabies is they have to do some kinda of test on it's brain tissue. ( thats the reason the said they cut it's head off) sorry. Rabies is an awful thing and once the state gets involved it could get rather messy.

I had a friend killed a rabied skunk out by his dog lots. He did right thing and called the state , they checked all his rabies shot records on all his dogs and the 2 pups he had that were 5 months old had to be put to sleep.( NC law.. dogs have to have rabies shot at 16 weeks of age) It was that or quarantine them at a vet for 6 months which comes out to around $5 or $6000 !!!!

They almost made him take the shots in the belly button also.

Good luck hope everything works out .

Yeah, I wish he hadn't told my mom they had to cut the cat's head off. She cried for two days. The vet she goes to is an asshole with the worst beside manner you've ever seen. He's downright hateful. She just doesn't want to drive the extra 15 minutes or so to our vet.

Rabies is nothing to mess with once a ferial cat or raccoon contracts, it easily spreads. They do decapitate for the test on brain tissue and blood vessels. Virginia will also do this to dogs with multiple bite cases against humans as a precaution.
