Charles Godfrey. Potential to be one of the best?

Was this ever definitively proven or is it just something we want to believe?

Cause I totally want to agree with this but I'm not sure it really can be heaped up on Marshall like that. Despite his substandard play.

Yeah don't get me wrong Godfrey messed up a lot but he's had to clean up Marshall getting burned by literally everyone a lot.

I think he'll do great this year. Ron Meeks is coaching the secondary this year, and last year he was the DC, when he had his best season. Meeks will continue to help Godfrey develop.

Godfrey and Martin are still young, and can still get better. I don't think either of them will be Reed or Polamalu, but they will be very good safeties.

I'm more worried about our Cornerbacks.

It did seem like Marshall couldn't cover anything that tried to go past him. Inside and in front he could do alright.

Thinking of Godfrey out on an island 1 on 1 with a speedy wideout is terrifying, but I do like how he cleans up running plays into the secondary. Again, it's been said about our corners as well, mainly Gamble - if the pass rush shows up on Sundays, it will help these guys out a ton.

Mr. Ellis is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers to read about the Carolina Panthers. He is great with his updates and really knows what he is talking about when it comes to Panther football. This is honestly the one thing that I have not agreed with him when it comes to the Panthers. To me Godfrey has been a below average safety for us. He has the tools but often looks lost or out of place.

The one player I dislike more than Godfrey is Richard Marshall and now he is gone, so I am willing to give Godfrey one more year to see how performs without Marshall. I hope he can prove me wrong because if he can be the SS the Panthers need, we are only a CB and 1 D-lineman away from being a scary D.

Coughlin's playcalling was very soft on our weaknesses and pretty vanilla as you would expect so I wasnt watching how well Godfrey did last night. I do think that its extremely difficult to be noticed as a "good" safety in a good defense because the front seven are usually making plays and so are your corners. Since your the last man to dinner at almost every meal sometimes you have to fight for the scraps.

The rough part with that position seems that if your getting noticed its either because youre getting beat a lot or doling out a lot of beatings. Sometimes both like Godfrey.

Thanks NJ. I appreciate the kind words. It's been a pleasure to cover the team inside the ropes this summer, and I hope it can continue.

Last chance this year IMO, hes been borderline terrible up to this point in his career. Looks lost out there on a regular basis, goes for the big hit way too much, and gets embarassed most of the time(see Cleveland game where he got trucked by Hillis, i lol'd) Most of the big, highlight reel plays you see other teams making on us, Godfrey is almost always involved, looking like a complete fool. Sean Considine anyone??

You have to look at the whole play, not who the last player chasing the person scoring is. This has been much discussed, but Richard Marshall went where he wanted when he wanted a lot of the time. Leaving safeties covering his a$$. Sure he got trucked, wow, that has nothing to do with how good he is or can be. Now Godfrey does make mistakes, but when he gets chances for picks, he makes them. He has made some great plays in his career. Rivera will get the best out of him.

well, I am on the same page with you. Not a big Godfrey fan. Fan of his skill set......just not the play I have seen from him.

new scheme. more aggressive. they could use him better and differently. I will give him one more season or at least some more play under the new D scheme before I continue my old stance on him.

Godfrey has always had the potential. I think Rivera is a better defensive mind than Fox.....and I never thought Fox was good and getting the best out of talent.

We will see.

I don't think he's elite by any stretch... I do hope he continues to be durable and who knows, he could break out... but for now, he's a pretty solid starter and that's about it imo.
Hey man, new attacking D who knows what he could do... any player for that matter. I agree with you
