Charles Godfrey. Potential to be one of the best?

In my opinion, the problem when evaluating Godfrey is the sub-par at best, and sometimes outright bad CB2 play. I'm not going to turn this into a trade for Asante Samuel thread or anything like that, but Richard Marshall was bad, and Captain could look even worse in his first year starting. Aside from getting literally ran over by Peyton Hillis last year on the goal line, I think he has been above-average in run support, and has been around the ball a lot in coverage. I just can't really form a solid opinion yet on him because he looks to be out of position too frequently, but again without watching actual game tape it's kind of hard to say if that was his fault, Marshall's fault, or somewhere in between. One good thing is that while Captain has been beat by bigger receivers, it's usually on jump balls and not outright getting burned so we should at least get a somewhat better glimpse of what Godfrey can do when he can focus solely on his own job.

He is no Ed Reed, but more importantly I think he might be a good solid starter for us this year. We'll see he's had some dumbass play and has been the beneficiary of some really fortunate plays that lead to his interceptions. In fact what I don't like about Godfrey is that the past three seasons when I see him intercepting the ball it doesn't ever look like he is doing it because of great skill or great understanding of the play around him. Instead it looks like luck.

It is hard to judge Godfrey in this system until we seem him play. I think he was below average in coverage in the cover 2. He always seemed to be late to the ball. He covered the run well, which shows me he can cover angles and get to the ball. I hope he shows better coverage skills in the new defense.

The Panthers under a cover 2 have been more reactive v. aggressive. As a result, our corners and safeties have to maintain coverage longer. It will be a different story with a more attacking front line. I have always liked Godfrey.

He makes some mistakes but a lot of his faults last year was covering Marshall's ass.

Was this ever definitively proven or is it just something we want to believe?

Cause I totally want to agree with this but I'm not sure it really can be heaped up on Marshall like that. Despite his substandard play.
