I'd say most people have a genre of music they don't listen to. I'm suspicious as to why you all are so defensive of rap. If someone were to tell me rock sucked, I'd laugh them off because I am aware of what I get out of it.

It wasn't as much of a diss on you as a general theme. Most of the time people aren't going to take the time to respond in detail on a public forum or sit here and form some type of scientific opinion.

Every man on this earth makes generalizations I'd say. It's a survival instinct. Grab a tissue and stop crying already. No one is trying to force their interests on you. There are plenty of things in the world I dislike and I didn't just list rap music. I complained about country and pop as well.

It's the rap and hip hop fans who are so insecure. That's probably why the lyrics are so dependent on image and material goods since the people are so empty inside.

...and you know what... bands like this rarely make it because the majority of consumers do exactly what sylvianlight does... limit themselves to one type of music...

actually, if people only said they "disliked" something, they wouldn't go out of their way to use 1 small aspect (that I call "rap") and apply it only in an attempt to make inaccurate generalizations about an entire genre, when only one small aspect relates to the points you are making..

characterizations such as: unable to speak English, illiterate, violent, misogynistic, and vulgar is not an accurate portrayal to the examples I just gave you.

you are focusing on one aspect of "rap"... and if you don't like that, fine. but you are, just wrong, if you choose to generalize 1 small aspect of rap into the entire genre known as hip-hop..

people are defensive for various reasons.. in regards to this topic? none of which you seem to think. Everyone who reads this thread will now see the typical, ignorant classification of rap music and also my enlightening response to it.

which was the intention. . I certainly doubt you will open your mind to the examples I gave which have no characteristics similar of that you seem determined to classify them as.. Hip-hop in it's true form carries a message and/or tells a story in some form or fashion, similar to all great music but much more poetic..

Comments like this are pointless. For one you don't know what I've listened to in my life, so clearly it's an absurd statement. This is a continuation of poor argumentative techniques displayed in this thread. I insulted rap music and subsequently had several personal insults directed at me.

Really the entire thread is pointless though because we know taste in art is subjective. No matter how great someone says Beethoven is, there is not many ways to substantiate the worth of his music. We can look to the popularity of it, but we can all name popular music we find repulsive. We could also point to reviews from music critics, but once again, that's their subjective opinion which is no better than any other opinion (especially considering many critics aren't even musicians themselves).

I stated it was my subjective opinion to avoid this 'my music is better than yours' debate. It was inevitable it seems.

Some of you should be more mature for the greater good of the forum, though. Clearly some of you have an emotional attachment to the music you listen to. Defend it all you want but don't hurl insults. You only make yourself look foolish.

it isn't subjective to inaccurately classify a genre.. I would simply be wrong when I tell you rock music is all about chewing off a bat's head and you must be a devil worshiper..

How so? Most rap I've heard sounds like some form of tribal music with nothing but drums and bass with occasional synthesizers that sound awful. Or they steal a tune from another artist. They also come off as illiterate, violent, misogynistic and vulgar.

I'd say pornography is closer to art.
