Comments on Cam from Giants

Comments from the Giants on Cam last night:

"I made a mistake watching him throw in warmups. Once the game started, he threw the ball really well. I was surprised how accurate he was. He passed well, he stayed in the pocket, and with experience and more reps, you can see him becoming a franchise-type quarterback. I was expecting him to run out of the pocket, but he didn’t. A lot of rookies, especially if they ran a lot out of the spread in college, you expect to take off. But he didn’t do that. He stayed in and did a good job of throwing the ball.” — Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, who sent a lot of blitzes at the rookie.

“I was surprised when I saw him try to block me, but I wasn’t going to let a quarterback block me. ... I was actually surprised he stayed in the pocket as much as he did. A young guy starting his first game, we expected him to get a little loose, but he did a good job of staying in there even when he took a couple of sacks.” — Giants DE Dave Tollefson, the target of Newton's block on a reverse

I am proud of Cam trying to stay pocket passer. But at the same time he has skills he needs to use. Learning when to take off is going to be the key, but again kudos to the kid for trying to learn to be a QB first.

And get lit up in a preseason game? No thanks.

cam looked fine and jimmy looked fine too. neither really stood out to me. both had good plays both had boneheaded plays.

When did Cam have a boneheaded play? I don't recall him throwing any near picks, or any horribly inaccurate passes? His worst pass all game was probably that one on that hitch to Clowney or whoever was out there, where he threw it too far back. But I don't mind throwing it there bc the defender cant pick it in that situation, rather way behind than on the front shoulder. 8-19 doesn't look great but a few of those incompletions were from great defending or dropped balls(3 from def and 1 drop from armanti). If half those get caught all of a sudden he is 10-19, which is a little over 50%, much better stat wise.

The reason Cam's performance was impressive was not due to stats or how he overtly did. It showed how much he has progressed, and that he is working on his basics to become our franchise QB. He is a spread QB who likes to run, but he spent the entire game in the pocket, going from under center. He just needs to adjust to the game a bit more, but already he is looking good.

Actually, he came from a spread offense where his running skills were utilized by the coaches. Too say that he likes to run as if that is his first instinct comes across very stereotypical, IMO. If anyone of these QBs who showned quickness to take off as soon as he feels threatened during his pre-season debut was Blaine.

Also, it seems as if those who want to see this kid fail is doing everything they can to handicap him while allowing the other QBs to get away with doing whatever helps them..Sad

I believe Cam more likes to do whatever it takes to help his team win. Something many seem to overlook cause they are to busy regurgitating everything the media spews out.

    • I know that. I'm not predicting it. Just putting the information out there so I will have receipts for later on when this dude turns into a stud at this level too.  It's kinda bittersweet, he'd help our offense out a great deal, but I'm wanting a QB next draft, so adding another weapon for Bryce is counterproductive in that regard.
    • I'm not sure if NO will be as QB aggressive as some assume.  They may focus on landing a top line prospect and slow rolling the rebuild for next year.  Could see them roll the dice in R3-4 to compete with Rattler, maybe a Howard fit.     I think the QB starved team's just take the gamble the Saints don't want Sanders, and target a mid to late 1st pick for a trade up to land him.  Still don't think Milroe or Shough are going R1.   But I think what may get lost in the trade up talk is about it being QB specific. A top team trying to get over the top could be the juicy trade (or two) that happens in round 1. Something I've flirted with is how aggressive Buffalo could be.  They have the ammunition for a big trade up, and I think Golden would pair super well with Coleman.  They need to cut to the chase and get playmakers there for Allen.  So yeah, love the idea of a BUF/ATL trade where they move up for him.  I'm even thinking about LAR getting aggressive for Warren or Loveland.  Imagine McVay rolling into 2026 with that added piece for a future QB...
    • Unfortunately, Ice, there are some blueprints of hybrid LB/edge players who were busts too--Everette Brown is one, but he was forced into a 4-3 DE role here.  I would say that the 3-4 defense has a lot of wiggle room for hybrids at the OLB/Edge position--I am just not seeing Walker as an elite player at any one role.  Coverage?  Rushing the passer from the 9?  And at his size... If we take him, I hope that I am wrong because there are some personalities I really would love to be on this roster.  Jihaad Campell is one.  Bech is another.
