Darin Gantt(TSN)-Opening statement: Newton lacks accuracy but flashes downfield magic

Thought his accuracy was rather solid tonight, it was his erratic touch on passes, and poor throws during pressure were his negatives (However, I guess you can chalk those up as inaccurate passes)

Lack of touch, inaccuracy, those are things that keep a QB from being great. They were also his knocks on him coming out. Those are two of the biggest issues (accuracy #1 hands down) that must be fixed if he is going to be our starter

But the problem is, I only remember about 3 REALLY bad throws. One he threw short over the middle... Looked like he tried to throw it low to where only the receiver could get it but it ended up being a rocket about 5 yards short of the receiver.

Other miss was a ball he threw to the sideline.

And other really bad one was to Clowney, which looked like it was supposed to have Clowney running a comeback towards the sideline. Could've been a timing/miscommunication issue with the route though and not really the throw.

Another one that stands out but I don't really think was a bad throw was the Armanti miss over the middle that would've been a TD... that was about 6 inches away from being a TD.

Other than that I thought he looked outstanding.

That Armanti throw would have been a touchdown had he stepped into that throw. The guy throws off his back foot so much, it's like second nature to him. But its nothing he can't remedy with coaching.

His complettion % was under 50%....that is the definition of inaccurate.

Glad to see someone else was seeing that as well.

He definitely has a tendancy to throw off his back foot. He has the arm strength to get away with it many times. But this is a BAD habit....one which coaching will address.

That article doesn't tell the whole story. No Newton was not perfect but his numbers were affected heavily by very good coverage on a few plays and outright drops by the receivers on others.

Your logic is amusing.

We should discount his completion % because of good coverage. Guess what....he will see good coverage every game. A starting QB MUST get his completion % up to 60%.

Cam is not there yet. He has a lot to work on and to improve. However, you definitely saw the flashes of how good he can be.

He needs time to develop (any unbiased person can see this). I hope they give him that time and don't throw him out there too soon.

Interested to see how he improves during the next three PS games.

I don't recall people harping on Jake's erratic throws this much. About 90% of the time Jake threw the ball down field it was inaccurate, but Smitty was able to go up and make the play. I mean seriously, how many times have Jake hit Smitty in stride, outside of the overtime game in St. Louis?

It's gotten to the point, where we've got people like TRD breaking down whether or not Cam's completions were accurate. Not to many QB's in the league would've been able to even make that throw to Olsen, so who cares whether or not Olsen had to slide/fall to catch it. This isn't a knock against Clausen, but if he was in the game that pass would've never seen the light of day.

I'm with Proudiddy, I felt like there was only about 2 of Cam's incompletions I would chalk up to Cam's inaccuracy problems.

1. The quick slant to Goody

2. The dirt ball to Naanee

The others, including the Armanti end zone pass, I put on pressure or good coverage. The Giants sent 6 on that play, again if that was Clausen, he would've been in the fetal position, and that pass wouldn't have even been thrown.

I will say this, Cam has a tendency to throw off his back foot when pressured, but outside of Peyton who doesn't.

I remember a recent interview on 610 with Phil Simms, and he stated that “you can’t make it in the NFL as a QB if you can’t throw off your back foot. It’s a job requirement.”

Throwing off your back foot as an NFL QB is completely necessary at times when pressured. It's when you turn your body to prepare for impact, that makes the pass erratic.

What about when you throw off your back foot when there is no pressure? The ball right before the miss to Armanti was a horrible, horrible throw to Barnidge off his back foot without any pressure.

I don't think throwing off your back foot is a requirement, but maybe being able to occasionally throw off your back foot accurately is a requirement

Dude, you need to go back and look at that play, because it was crazy pressure. That whole series the Giants sent heat. The two passes to Barnidge, and the Armanti overthrow was all due to pressure.

he needs to work on that.....

But QBs who are more of gun slingers downfield vs. precision passers do that from time to time. How many Jake Delhomme highlights over the years have him throwing off his backfoot b/c he saw something downfield he just had to throw to w/o setting up for a proper throw.

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
