Darin Gantt(TSN)-Opening statement: Newton lacks accuracy but flashes downfield magic

Does DG have a new gig covering the Panthers with The Sporting News... Would love if he did! Anyway, here's his article on his impressions tonight.

The result didn’t match the buildup, but Cam Newton’s debut with the Carolina Panthers didn’t disappoint, either. And for a town that watched the worst quarterback play in the NFL last season and has struggled to find an answer at the position for years, that’s a considerable step up.

...

Seems less positive than I perceived it, but still a great article.

Yeah, I was gonna tweet DG and ask him why he didn't take into account the multiple drops/poor performance on the receiving end (possibly up to 4 drops if you count both Lafell's failed TD conversions, Clowney and Armanti drops on well thrown balls).

So, I thought it was a much better outing than DG is conveying here, then again, he might be trying to communicate objectivity to the point of negativity?

And I think to most of our fans, they walked away remembering the accuracy on the throws he did make, rather than the misses. His presence and ability on the field were obvious and he looked great overall.

If Cam can find that "tweener" velocity, somewhere between blazing fast and a lofting duck, he will be a lot better QB.

He was able to hit that velocity a few times tonight and it resulted in some good intermediatte passing routes. He needs to be more consistent with it.

He's got it... thought the first pass to Olsen was fairly good "touch" wise... He just isn't consistent with it yet. He'll be fine. It'll come with reps, and I trust he'll get it down consistently.

I think you're right... I didn't make it past the 4th post...

What a bunch of f*cking stat line reading haters. LOL @ comparisons to Jamarcus Russell, pure ignorance. There are some serious trolls on that board, and I think some of them are from here, lol.

Those would be Accuracy problems..

Gantt hit the nail on the head.

But the problem is, I only remember about 3 REALLY bad throws. One he threw short over the middle... Looked like he tried to throw it low to where only the receiver could get it but it ended up being a rocket about 5 yards short of the receiver.

Other miss was a ball he threw to the sideline.

And other really bad one was to Clowney, which looked like it was supposed to have Clowney running a comeback towards the sideline. Could've been a timing/miscommunication issue with the route though and not really the throw.

Another one that stands out but I don't really think was a bad throw was the Armanti miss over the middle that would've been a TD... that was about 6 inches away from being a TD.

Other than that I thought he looked outstanding.

This shouldn't be listed under what he didn't do well

• Took an unnecessary risk. You have to wonder if his eagerness to please is going to result in putting himself in peril. Newton threw a solid block on a reverse, putting a lick on Giants defensive end Dave Tollefson. But coaches yelled at him in camp after a similar play. It’s good that he’s stout enough to take a shot or two, but a quarterback is going to take enough hits as it is, and there’s no sense borrowing trouble.

    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
