The defense

One preseason game is a small sample and the other teams will adjust as they get film on Rivera/McDermott, but I felt like watching this defense was night and day from the last few years. Same talent and players, but the execution was very different.

- Crossing/timed blitzes that actually worked.

- Way fewer missed tackles.

- Everyone moving forward and attacking and filling instead of reacting.

- Lineman shooting gaps and slanting.

- Better awareness and backside pursuit.

- Emphasis on pressure to help improve the pass coverage - this will be HUGE.

All of the new players have some serious attitude. Considine, Thomas Williams, Greco, the rookie DTs... I think I'm going to like this staff.

Who?

They looked pretty good during the first part of last season too. I suppose you can only stay playing at a high level for so long when your offense never gives you more than 5 minutes to rest.

The defense didn't look good against the Giants in the opening game last year. And though they played well after that, they got a lot of sacks during preseason, and almost none in the first four games of last year. That being said, I agree they were the best part of the team last year. And I think we will be a top ten defense this year.

Here is the important part:

DE: 2 starters out; two pass-rushing specialists forced to start.

DT: A late third round rookie from a nerd school and a former practice squad player that was cut last year. In relief? An undrafted, second-year, free agent from powerhouse Temple and a third round rookie. Total NFL game experience: 6 games. Total starting experience: 2.

CB: 2 starting CBs did not play: If you like your 7th round or undrafted CBs, then look no further: CJ Wilson, 7th rounder, been cut, knows the PS better than anyone. Robert McClain: was toasted in a few starts last year as a rookie 7th rounder. Stanford: A 7th rounder who plays behind Munnerlyn, another 7th rounder, and has shown improvement. Kendric Burney: Should have been a 7th rounder but slipped into undrafted free agency. THAT IS WHAT WE WENT TO WAR WITH LAST NIGHT.

LB: WLB out, MLB out. Second teamers in.

3 points. And how many turnovers did the offense have? Unreal.
